8 for 100,000’ cache challenge!

The cache is at the posted coordinates. In order to log this cache, you must find and log 8 caches which are located at a combined elevation of 100,000 feet.

There are a few rules which go along with this challenge, and they are listed below:

1.) Any cache listed on the geocaching.com website, from anywhere in the world, is eligible to be used for this challenge.

2.) Previous finds count. If the cache is currently archived, but you found it when it was active, you may use it.

3.) 2008 Garmin Mapsource is the software I will be using to check the elevations of your caches.

4.) Elevations will be counted as follows: If your cache is found to be between two lines of contour without touching, it will count as half the elevational difference between the two (ex. If your cache shows up to be between 13,200’ and 13,300’, it will count as 13,250’). If your cache is touching one of the lines of contour, it will count for that elevation.

5.) A picture posted with the elevation on your GPS receiver may be used instead of the “contour method” of estimating elevation described in 4. Use whichever method will give you the greater elevation. (ex. Your cache shows up between the 13,200’ and 13,300’ contour interval, but you have a picture of your GPS receiver at the cache with 13273’, you may use the higher number with the posting of the picture).

5.) A cache found at the top of a known mountain peak can not count for more than the accepted elevation for that peak. U.S. Geological Survey elevations will be used for known peaks. (ex. You find a cache at the top of Pikes Peak at 14,110’, but have a picture with 14,155’ from the top of Pikes Peak. It will still only count for the accepted elevation of the top of the peak). In other words, you can not use GPS receiver error to give you a higher elevation than the accepted elevation for the top of the peak.

6.) For any cache found at a different location from the coordinates which are given for the original listing (multi-caches, puzzles, traveling caches) the elevation will be taken from the original listed coordinates. (added 6/22/2009)

7.) Sign the log at this cache!

When you log your find, please include the following for each of the caches you will be using: Date of your find, Cache waypoint number, Name of the cache, Elevation. Please total your elevations at the end of your list.

1. 08/10/2006 GC659F Pike Never Made It! 14,075’
2. 08/24/2008 GC7DBB Mt. Evans Star Watching 14,125’
3. 08/24/2008 GC7C07 Top of the World 14,200’
4. 08/24/2008 GC1FDM1 No Sherpas Required 11,675’

I have had this one on my "go get" list for a year or so, and was excited to finally be in the area today. Like the previous cacher, unfortunately, I found a perfect hiding spot at GZ, but no cache. Expanded the search a good ways, but still no luck. I wonder if this has gone missing?

Will post my qualifiers when I can change this to a smiley.

DNFed this one today.
I'd never been to this park, but on a chilly (37F) and foggy morning, there were lots of recreating muggles in the area. Luckily, I didn't really have to worry about them at GZ.
I probably spent 15 minutes in all, looking for the cache container. My GPSr kept zeroing out around a very likely-looking spot, but I checked and rechecked it, to no avail. I caved and looked at the hint about 5 minutes in, which helped a tiny bit. Of course, there were many other possible hiding spots within a vague 30' margin of error; I checked a lot of them, but I could hardly get them all (too confusing). I don't suppose the cache container has gone missing in the almost 9 months since the last find; it's probably just me (it usually is). Well, at least I had some nice morning exercise!

Wow! It's been a while since my family and I looked for this one (2/24/14!). Since then, we've done lots of caching and hiking, so finding eligible caches was no trouble. This was a fun search - it took me longer than it should have. I almost gave up on it a second time, but on my last, longing look back, I spotted something I hadn't checked. Hurrah! I'm glad I saved this one for my #600 milestone! Thanks for a really fun challenge and final hide! Here are my eligible caches:

7/18/2014 GC230BW Alpine Visitor Center Cirque 11,796
7/2/2014 GC7DBB Mt. Evans Star Watching 14,125

Apparently I am no longer able to find a cache without being accompanied by the lovable and always cheerful herndonrd. Today was no exception, as I was out and about caching with herndonrd simply because I make him look good. He typically finds the caches while I look in all the wrong places. We were on a special mission today to find this cache and complete the challenge. We made the trek to ground zero and then something strange happened: I actually found the container. This is a rarity when I cache with herndonrd so containing my excitement was difficult.

After we did the whole sign and replace thing here we celebrated our victory by checking out the view from the tower before hiking off to another one. Thanks for the fun challenge and for getting me outside on such a beautiful day.

Here's my list of qualifiers:
