Applewood Park hosts a three part Boop–a–licious cache dedicated to a 1930s cartoon character who has become an international icon.Betty Boop made her film debut on August 8, 1930 as a curvaceous canine cabaret singer. Originally intended to play opposite the dog Bimbo, her character evolved, her floppy dog ears morphed into earrings, and by 1932 the world’s first truly female cartoon star was fully formed. There had been female characters before Betty, but they were essentially stick-like figures who played second fiddle to male characters. Betty’s “Boop – oop – a - doop”, delivered in her melodious voice, became her signature line. Musical stars, including Maurice Chevalier, Rudy Vallee, Ethel Merman, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway, appeared in Boop cartoons. Featuring these singers helped popularize a new and developing American art form - jazz. Black performers were included in the Boop cartoons; at the time their appearance was considered groundbreaking. Eventually Betty was nudged from the limelight by Pudgy, a pooch who was forever getting her in trouble, and Grampy, who assisted Betty with his clever inventions. As the first rumblings of World War II began, the cartoon market declined and the series ended in 1939. Betty’s popularity continued and in 1985 a television animated musical special celebrated her. Now, more than three quarters of a century after Betty’s debut, she remains a glamorous international icon.
Coordinates listed are for the parking lot. To find coordinates for Waypoint #2, use elements of Betty’s story combined with items found in Applewood Park to calculate letters A through J in the following waypoint; a conveniently placed table in the playground is a comfy place to sit while doing the math.
Waypoint #2: North AA degrees BB.CDE minutes and West FFF degrees GG.HIJ minutes
AA = the last two digits of the year Betty’s cartoon series ended BB = (the number of letters in Betty’s last name) times eleven C = (the number of horseshoe courts in the park) times seven D = (the number of times the word "shapes" appears in the playground) times seven E = (the number of green roofs in the playground) plus three FFF = (the year Betty’s television special aired) minus 1880 GG = (the number of green metal steps to the top of the green roofed slide-include the top as a step) plus two H = the last digit of the year of Betty’s film debut I = (the number of swings in the playground) divided by two J = (the number of red poles supporting the blue-roofed cupola in the playground) plus (the number of green roofs in the playground)
Confirmation calculations: AA + BB + C + D + E = 101 FFF + GG + H + I + J = 126
Go west on the gravel trail; it will take you nearly all of the way to Waypoint #2, where you will find coordinates for the third and final waypoint. Continue on the gravel trail until you're within about 30 feet of Waypoint #3, the geocache. Initial items in the cache – all Boop related – were an ornament, a bandanna, a pair of socks, a necklace, and a zippered purse. That container was stolen; it was replaced in June 2006, moved to a different location, and stocked with a Boop bracelet, a pair of Boop socks, and a Boop zippered purse. In closing the container lid, please press down on all 4 corners so as to keep out water. Then leave the cache well-hidden.
[WP #2] three feet high [WP #3] about a yard from a corner [Boop on!]

05/11/2019 By spyguy1 Decided to go for this one after getting FTF on the new cache in this park. Didn’t take me too long to solve the initial puzzle and the second stage. I spent a few minutes locating the final stage. There are now many branches on the ground that make it a little difficult to reach the final, but I managed. The log was pretty wet and there was some water in the container but I was able to sign. TFTC
12/26/2018 By grizzlycacher Not sure why I’ve never done this. Family took the dog for a walk on this cold afternoon. No trouble at any of the stops.
07/02/2018 By puzzle player I wiped the contents dry with a towel. Enjoy.
06/24/2018 By quinnster212 That was really fun! Learned how we don’t read everything correctly. Reread and recounted came up with the correct answers. Thanks for the fun. The log and everything in it is wet. No Betty Boop swag, long gone I suppose. Thanks for the adventure!

08/14/2016 By dustyriver A find after our mountain adventures with the dogs. Stop two took sometime. We looked for awhile, and it was right there. We just looked past it too much, but it was a good end to the geocaching day, Best Wishes, DustyRiver
