Park by the store and walk over to the monument. DO NOT drive across the bridge.
Devil's Gulch and Cold Canyon began to see signs of early development when George Ragan ranched cattle here in the early 1870s. Peter Pauldy acquired the land in the center of town in 1885, and the spot was known as the Pauldy Ranch until the Knapps established the first permanent homestead in 1897 and set up a sawmill, at which time it took on the name Knappville. Finally the area was platted for a resort by the Boulder Presbytery in 1903. It was Reverend William Schureman who suggested the name "Glen Haven" at that time. A streamside lot cost a whopping $50!
This stone monument is a memorial to the founders of Glen Haven, Rev. Schureman and Mason Knapp. It was dedicated in 1948 with a simple ceremony: Rev. Marcus Grether of Greeley made the dedication speech, boy scouts unveiled the plaque, Joe Knapp (Mason's son) read the inscription, and the program concluded with accordion music, polkas, and hymns accompanied on a portable organ. The plaque includes the names of the 27 original members of the resort.
The last line tells it all: "The mountains shall bring peace to the people" (Psalms LXXII).
