Wetlands are simply lands affected by water, resulting in unique plants and soils. Wetlands and riparian areas represent only about 2% of the land area of Colorado, but provide benefits to over 75% of the species in the state, including waterfowl and several declining species! There are 12 unique species of fish that are top priority in our conservation program. Besides the River Otter and the Yellow Mud Turtle, at least 30 species of birds and amphibians also find protection in these wetlands.
Colorado has lost 50% of its wetlands, and 95% of riparian areas have been degraded by human activity. Therefore, protection, restoration, and enhancement of these areas are vital to conserve wildlife diversity in the state.
While pursuing these geocaches, please be respectful of their ecosystems and enjoy their subtle beauty.
NOTE: Best to avoid this cache on Father’s Day weekend as roads are closed for Rodeo.
Cache Description: The resident Coyotes are very familiar with these hidden “earth secrets,” which completely elude the Wranglers that also occupy this area. This 3-stage multi is quick and easy and “delves” into some very cool “earth secrets.”
Stage #1 – During the spring this crevice becomes a beautiful underground waterfall, which is, sadly, dry the rest of the year.
Stage #2 - Remember to note the Story Teller who lives in this hideout. You will need his name for later in the Wetlands series.
