NOTE:::DECEMBER 2011::: NO LONGER CAN YOU 4X4 to this Cache in Pike N.F.

This 4x4 trail, the LAST ONE in Jefferson County, has been perminately CLOSED by the USFS. This is a direct result of trail abuse by off roaders, who could not tread lightly. Sad Sad Sad.....Now it's hike or bike only, making the difficulty rating high at 5 for the distance and terrain. I may retrieve and shut this down. I'll take any feed back.
No Longer 4X4 here. Now it's mountain bike, or hike the Stoney Pass Jeep Road to this cache. One moderate steep off canter section, not too hard.
This cache has a story of course! about 5 or 6 years ago I was 4-wheeling up there. I started up a little aluring sand hill. STOP! I said to myself. I know better. When you can only see sky and hood and you haven't previously walked it......it could be disasterous!

I backed down, got out and walked the little hill. GOOD THING I DID ! At the top, at that time, was an empty verticle mine shaft that would have ate my Jeep! I thought DAMN! Someday someone could drive into that!

A few months after that, a local Deputy told me about a woman who walked out of the forest at night alone badly injured. She said she drove into a mine shaft and couldn't remember where it happened. She had to climb out with a broken arm or shoulder, and was darn lucky a little Aspen Tree had snagger her Bronco and bent in with it, being her life line to get out!
(she walked about 5 miles to Wellington lake for help).
Knowing I was a local Jeeper and knew the area well, the deputy asked if might know where that could happen? Shaazaam! I bet I do! The next day I went to the mine that I knew of......and there was her little Bronco all swallowed up! It's still there today as a reminder.....If you don't know whats in front of you off roading, and cant see whats over an obstacle....get out and have a look! It just might be a "Jeep Trap" !

(Most Maps don't show this Jeep road going as far as it really does. It does go to the cache and maybe a 1/2 mile more. Great pic nic spot at the end by a creek and Aspen grove. The cache is 50 feet or less off the Jeep trail.)

Got it today with a few friends. Cache still there, slightly wet inside but log usable. Retrieved a GroundSpeak trackable that's been in there a while...... Had a good time but ran out of motivation to look for I See Cheese.

Well......I've noticed people are still visiting this one despite the long hike, so I will leave it in place. The cache is in a good ammo can and sealed well. It IS a beautiful area. I'll keep an eye on the logs & visits.

Found today. Doing the Decalibron tomorrow. Will post more when I'm home.

Back home after a wonderful Decalibron hike with kenyansherpa! He and I had planned to meet this morning (Saturday) at Kite Lake to hike and bag those 14ers and the caches on them. I have been trying to fill my 2X Fizzy and only had two spots left - 5/3 and 1/5. I made plans to go after Jeep Trap to fill the 5/3 spot since it wasn't too far out of the way from my route to Kite Lake. I left Friday morning none too early and got to Bailey at 11 am. After arriving at the parking spot on Stoney Pass, I first went and found Denali41's nearby NTB series cache and then headed SE. I did some bushwacking that did save me some time and some that didn't. I should have followed the old trail more than I did. I eventually made it to the cache and commenced searching. After a little bit I found the well hidden ammo box. This one had been lonely for nearly 2 years! Thanks HRBandit for this really nice backcountry cache!!!

Joined up with sepfind for the walk on a very nice fall day. We heard some shots in the far distance but there was no one else out in this direction.

Made a loop out of Denver to Deckers area, over Stoney Creek Pass, then Buffalo Creek back to Deckers Rd. Nice day and a lot of great wildflowers to see. This was my goal for the day and well worth a second fizzy square. Hiked up from the parking spot just to the east of Mondo's Stump and had to discuss with the campers hanging out. The trail bury the COP mentioned is very impressive and doing it's job. Spent some extra time near ground zero watching about 20 elk move through the area before signing the log. Then, on my way down I flushed out a grouse and got a good pic of it. Thanks!
