“I do not fear man or devil; it is not in my blood, and if they can shoot any straighter or quicker than I, let them try it, for a .44 equalizes frail women and brute men, and all women ought to be able to protect themselves against such ruffians.” -Ellen
Ellen was born in Nottingham, England on Nov. 4, 1842. At the age of 7, she attended a fair and encountered a gypsy queen who foretold of a life of tragedy and treasures. This would turn out to be true.
She met her husband in 1860 while aboard a steamer bound for America. Once married, they settled in New York. Unfortunately, three of her four children died at an early age from scarlet fever and her husband, in time, succumbed to the injuries he received in the Civil War.
At the advice of her children’s former nanny, she decided to head west. Living first in Pueblo and Denver and then Gunnison, she finally ended up in Colorado Springs in 1903.
In the early 1900’s, incoming trains at the Denver and Rio Grande Depot were met by locals competing for the business of eastern tourists who wanted a Wild West experience. Ellen exploited the tourist’s gullibility. She secured some tourist cabins and created an eclectic tourist trap complete with rustic wood décor and pets such as snakes and macaws. She would dress in a simple cotton blouse, wool skirt with lace up boots, often holding a mining pick, and with a six shooter tucked into her belt.
For years she catered to tourists and enchanted them with fanciful tales, until in 1920 a flood washed out the road to her cabins. At that time, due to finances, the city decided not to go to the expense of rebuilding the road.
Ellen died a year later on June 16, 1921. It is said that her grave faces the direction of where her cabins once were.
Do you know who she was?
The cache is approximately 0.4 miles as the crow flies directly west of the location of where her cabins once were. There is a lesser-used trail that starts off relatively flat and heads directly west from the old cabin site. The final three digits of the coordinates are 054 and 465.
