Greyrock Mountain (elevation 7,613 feet) in Larimer County has a highly distinctive profile from Interstate 25 and other eastern vantages. Its steep southern aspect shows dramatically in silhouette as seen from the east. Many admirers of this Ranked Peak do not realize that the mountain’s lines from other directions are also remarkable and highly distinctive. This "Profile Series" consists of 11 Traditional caches placed on Ranked Peaks that surround Greyrock Mountain, as well as a Multi-staged cache and a "Mystery" cache. Views of this mountain from each cache location and from the stages of the Multi are captivating, and each provides a unique profile perspective of Greyrock. If you have as an objective finding all 13 caches in this series, you will eventually view this marvelous mountain from many angles as well as from close up. To attain these views (as well as the treasures of the log books in all of the cache containers!) you will have hiked dozens of miles, gained significant vertical elevation, and have reached some remote areas. A challenge confronting you will be discovering the most efficient approaches for accessing certain of these caches. Enjoy this particular profile cache, and consider finding all of the others! Appreciate your adventures as you "Profile" Greyrock Mountain!
This profile cache was hidden after the date of publication of the Profile Mystery Cache (GC2KW91). No codes required for the Mystery Cache are in this cache container.
Orizaba’s Overlook–Soaring Over Hewlett Gulch
Drive to the Greyrock Mountain Trailhead parking area. From parking, follow the main Greyrock Mountain Trail until its junction with the Greyrock Meadows Trail. At this junction take the Meadows Trail and follow it to the cache location. It’s a fun hike, and involves considerable elevation gain. I stopped for a rest when I reached the overlook where the trail abruptly turns back toward the east. Here, I temporarily let my puppy Orizaba off her leash so she could sniff around and enjoy this special place. We had it all to ourselves, not having encountered other hikers since we had left the Greyrock Mountain Trail. She sat just above me, in a spot that afforded magnificent views directly down into Hewlett Gulch–we could see people hiking along Gordon Creek on the Hewlett Gulch Trail far below us, and I could pick out approximate locations of some of my geocache hides in the gulch. Orizaba’s overlook location offered special views of several peaks that are featured in this Profiles of Greyrock Mountain series–specifically, the Western View; the SW View (Reprised); the West SW View; and the South SW View. The actual summit of Greyrock Mountain is hidden by the Southwestern View peak. Even without seeing Greyrock Mountain itself, the views from this overlook are remarkable.
I decided the spot was so special that I’d hide another cache in the Profile series–right where Zaba was sitting. It’s a small container hidden in a rocky outcrop. It should be an easy one to find, once you’ve made the effort to reach the coordinates. Enjoy your hike; enjoy the geocache!
