A two-stage multi requiring no more than a half-mile hike. The first stage is not at the posted coordinates. Solve the puzzle below to find out where to go.
With apologies to George Gamow: A page apparently torn from an old diary was found under the floorboards of an abandoned house in the vicinity of Colorado Springs. Since the diary is missing, the only clue to a lost cache is the following:

“…With the posse hot on our trail, we knew we had to hide the loot. We hitched our horses at an old cabin and figured out a way to hide our plunder and be able to find it later when thing’s cooled down. We found a good spot and disguised and hid our take so it wouldn’t be found by anybody but us. Next, we hurried back to the cabin, and my cohort prepared a clue that had the coordinates of the cache. He designed the clue so that it would lead us back to the cache but would be meaningless to anybody that happened to stumble upon it. Meanwhile, I paced off the distance from the cabin’s north-facing front door to a nearby pile of rocks SE of the cabin, then turned ninety degrees to the right and paced off an equal number of steps and marked that point. I returned to the cabin’s front door and paced off the distance to a very large tree to the east, turned at a right angle to the left and paced off an equal number of steps to a second point. We hid the clue at the point midway between the two marked points…”

Legend has it that when the robbers returned to uncover their cache after serving lengthy terms in the state prison, they were incapable of locating the old cabin, as it had succumbed to the ravages of fire and time, and they were unable to find their booty. Locals had found the rocks and tree used as reference points by the two bandits and recorded the tree’s coordinates as N38 55.563 W104 51.510 and N38 55.519 W104 51.495 for the rocks. However, they also were unable to locate the cabin and the cache, but it is presumed the clue to the cache and the cache itself are still hidden somewhere in the area.

A calculator may be useful.

I looked at this yesterday, taking the directions generally, not specifically, and couldn't figure out what piece of info I was overlooking that would bring it all together! Was in the area and decided to do a blind sweep of the area as the sun set, which made for a nice little walk, but didn't seem to fit with the logic of a math puzzle. A PAF confirmed that the directions were indeed literal. Duh! A few calculations later, and everything was set. Ran around Blodgett this morning, and stopped here on my way home. Clue and cache are both in great shape! Thanks for this puzzle...a face palm every once in a while is healthy.

Working through this one was a lot of fun. The treasure is long gone, but I enjoyed the puzzle and the find. Thanks for keeping this cache going.

I've geocached with a Triple 7 pilot, a Valkyrie Queen, and Alan Turing's brother from another mother, so finding this cache was no different than when caching with them. Using my slide rule, protractor, French curve, abacus, t-square, a VAX, and a sharp number two pencil with an eraser, plus a little knowledge for geocaching, I was able to put together a formula to calculate where I needed to go to find the information required for the final. Success on this late winter day which is fooling us with its spring-like temperatures. Thanks for maintaining this cache because it is one of the good ones.
Someone was hungry.

Took Bill some time to solve

I know I was never anybody's math hero... But man!! How much curvature of the earth does there have to be for the numbers to be off by 47 yards at this latitude !?!!
I reached out to CO for advice if I was on the right track when I couldn't find anything at my solution... she hinted me pretty heavily in the direction I needed to go, & success was attained more rapidly than a weekend parking space BigSmile

Thanks for the great puzzle cache! I have had this one solved for awhile and have made several attempts to find stage one. Today I noticed that it had been replaced several weeks ago. I reached out to the previous finders to compare notes and my coords were pretty much the same. So armed with a hint and a huge need to get out for some fresh air and a good hike I set out after work. Sure enough I had searched that area thoroughly before and that was definitely not there. Armed with the coords to the final I set out. A few minutes later and some delicate poking with a stick I had the "loot" in hand! Signed and stamped the log and replaced as found. All is well here!

We LOVE the fall weather and hiking in one of our favorite areas!! gampa is a math teacher, so this one was perfect for him. Found the replaced first stage quickly and moved on. Wow, so many hidey-holes at the final when your gps is bouncing all over the place. We looked and looked and looked and looked. We didn't want to leave the area without a find, so we resorted to sending out a message to the CO for a nudge. But.......before hearing back, gamma tried a spot for the third time and was so surprised to make the find. Whoa was that good camouflauge! We were happy to send the CO another note announcing our discovery. Signed log and replaced container as found. Thanks for this great mystery cache!

The first stage was missing. It has been replaced at the proper GZ for the puzzle. I also checked on the final and it is in good shape.

Enjoyed the puzzle. Couldn't find the clue at stage 1.
