Native American Tribe Series.
Agawam

The word means a fish-curing place. At one time, the population of the Agawam region, which stretched north and northwest from the Danvers River and south from the Merrimack River, numbered in the thousands. But a hepatitis plague in the early 1600s depleted the population to as few as 50 by the time the English arrived. At least 3 Indian villages or tribes in Massachusetts are known about. The most important was at Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. The chief sold the site in 1638. Its jurisdiction included the land on Newbury River, and the tribe was a part of the Pennacook confederacy. It was almost extinct in 1658, but as late as 1726 there were still 3 families living near Wigwam hill. The second tribe or band of that name had its chief town on Long hill, near Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. Springfield was sold in 1635 and the Indian town was in existence in 1675. This tribe was commonly classed with the Pacomtuc. The third was about Wareham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, the site of which was sold in 1655. It was probably subject to the Wampanoag, but joined in the plot against the English in 1621.

There are no known survivors of this tribe.

I guess I've been suckered in by these souvenirs, and they lured me out to find a few. Tried to wait until things got a little cooler, but it was still 99-100 degrees at 5:30 when I started. Made a quick lap where I can hop in and out of the well air conditioned car. I'm pretty wary of GZs like this in the summer. So I got out my pokey stick. Knocked on GZ with a few taps. Nothing came flying out. Gave it a decent shove and rattle, still nothing. Felt it was safe to grab the cache, so I did. Found it a little ironic two logs ago the cache was found in 15 degrees. Everything is in good shape here. Thanks for the smiley! Find #2549.
