"Fort Wicked." In the summer of 1820 Long's expedition traveled up the South Platte River, and a score or so of years later Fremont followed in Long's footsteps. In the '6o's this was the route of the Overland stages passing back and forth between Omaha and Denver. The intrepid and resourceful frontiersman, Hollen Godfrey, kept one of the stage stations on the line along the Platte. It was located near Merino. Godfrey was always on the alert, and the redskins never caught him napping. They once swooped down upon his ranch, and a hot encounter ensued. A dozen or more of the warriors were killed or wounded before they were beaten off. After this " brush," the savages named Godfrey's station " Fort Wicked." In the days of Indian fighting this was the only house on the stage line in Colorado that was not burnt. Up to 1869 travel was dangerous on the plains, and immigration to Colorado was checked. Mail coaches were ambushed and fired upon. Some large caravans were attacked. As a result, the Territory's growth was almost at a standstill before 1870.

The last 8 days were a whirlwind for me. It was my best friend's son's wedding in CO and so I decided that I would drive alone since my normal partner in caching, geddygirl96, was unable to get off work. I decided that I wanted to try and fill in as many different counties as possible on this trip and at the end of it, I hit almost 70 new counties. I got to stay off the interstate for large portions of the 3000 mile round trip, which made every cache off the highway even better. I saw some amazing countryside along the way. On my path to CO, I went via Omaha and on the return trip, I tried to stick with highway 50 through MO and IL. I saw pheasant, turkey, deer, turtles, more turkeys, elk, a crazy mole, and a variety of birds in my travels this week. A large variety of flora as well. Thank you to all the COs whose caches I found and my heartfelt concern for all those who were in the path of tornadoes that I witnessed the destruction on my return home.

I love learning history of the areas where I travel and enjoyed the history here. Took a bit snce I was looking for something much bigger. tftcsl tnln

On a road trip to do repair work on a goose blind and some geocaching. Enjoyed the history on the marker. Based on the last two logs and what looks like a new fence, we installed a replacement container. It's rooted in place. Thanks for the placement, twins18!

Neat piece of history that you'd probably fly right by if not for the cache. Thanks for getting us to stop and check it out.

Day 295 of my current caching streak as I work towards a goal of 365 days straight. Day 3 of my caching road trip from Salt Lake City, UT to Ohio, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Texas and then back to Utah on the 10th day of June with very sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 90's. Posting a find much like the geocacher's before me. Thanks Twins 18 for the cache.
