This is one of a series of caches that are associated with the local history with a focus on our family.

Somewhere in this area my great grandfather had an apple orchard. Before my dad passed away, we attempted to determine where it was based on his memory.

The actual location is not known, but he remembered being about 100 yards north of an oiled road (possibly HWY 6 now) and about a quarter of a mile from the irrigation ditch to the west. This was during the war (WWII) sometime. The river was not far away as well.

The early years of apple orchards in this area were among the highest dollar yield per acre anywhere in the world, with the Fruita area being the highest in the world. The fruit of the area was shipped by rail through either The Western Colorado Producers Cooperative, The Grand Junction Fruit Growers Association, United Fruit Growers Association, or Schmieding Brothers.

The decline and near collapse of the fruit industry was brought on by the sale of newly planted orchards to Eastern buyers that knew little of farming. Neglect of these orchards led to massive crop failures and disease. The main disease was the codling moth which multiplied rapidly in the poorly maintained fields and eventually led to the failure of the local industry as a world leader.

Congrats to beth1057 for FTF.
