Discover Telluride History! Tucked in the "Bear Creek Mill" cache are fun historic photos as well as the story behind mining and milling in this area.
These are the foundations of a mill constructed by the San Miguel Consolidated Gold Mining Company, or SMC, a mining venture funded by eastern investors. Wooed by the idea of the possibility of electricity, the SMC proposed to build a giant mill that could cheaply process enormous quantities of low-grade ore, materializing a magnificent profit out of previously worthless mining claims up Bear Creek. SMC's general manager, L.L. Nunn, was overly optimistic about the mill's potential. The massive 120 stamp mill was constructed in 1892 for $250,000, and operated until 1914. The mill never lived up to expectations.
