It's located between Dolores & Lewis, CO. On Hwy 184, watch for "McPhee Reservoir" & "McPhee Recreation Area" signs at Road 25, go north about 9/10's of a mile, best to park on the west side of the road. You're looking for a 9"x 6"x2.5" Loc-n-Loc container filled with "treasures". Have fun! However, I suggest that before caching, you take the first road to the right (campground sign) & drive up to the overlook (camera sign)for spectacular views of the reservoir & surrounding mountain ranges including Mesa Verde & Sleeping Ute. You can actually see New Mexico, Arizona & Utah from there. There are trails down to the boat launch & campground from there too. Then go back to Road 25, go north about 7/10's of a mile to hunt for the cache (best to park on the west side of the road).
This cache area offers awesome views of McPhee Reservoir which is connected to the Dolores River, therefore there is a dramatic change in contour as the river ebs & flows with the melting snow, rain or lack thereof, just like magic. There are aspen, cedar & pinon trees, sagebrush, prickly pear cactus & wildflowers. Nice views of the often snowcovered LaPlata & San Miguel mountains
You may continue north on road 25 & go east at the corner into SageHen for access to the reservoir, restrooms, fishing, horse trailer parking at the corrals & many miles of trails to explore. Elevation is 6998 feet.
Why not catch Carron's Travel Bug Hotel #GCQ3GB right near by while you're here?
The Anasazi Heritage Center is just east on Hwy 184 about 3 miles & has terrific hands-on as well as visual information on the Anasazi culture & this area. In creating the reservoir, the town of McPhee was buried under the many acres of water as were some of the cultural resources. There's also a nice paved trail winding up to an overlook & an Anasazi pueblo.
