Careful! This GeoCache has been near this power station for a long time and it may hum! Really? Well, remember some of the stories we used to hear about bed springs humming when near power lines? Let’s examine this more carefully…
This is a major power sub-station that provides power for the eastern parts of Arapahoe, Douglas and Elbert counties. They act like circuit breakers, condition the power and remove spikes like when lightning strikes near, and will step down the voltage to be distributed to the users. The power lines coming in conduct 230 kilo volts of electricity! That’s pretty shocking, to use the pun! But what some folks wonder is, am I in danger being near these sub-stations or even the power lines for any amount of time? (Like when logging this GeoCache?)

I was curious so I did some research. One of the ways to measure electric fields is to use a meter that measures what is called EMF or Electro-Motive Force.EMF is measured in a unit called “Gauss”, to honor one of the major contributors Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss, a German mathematician and physical scientist.

And to put the Gauss into perspective, I measured the electric fields that exist in various parts of my house. If I measure the EMF near a standard incandescent light bulb it measures 2 milli-Gauss The EMF near a standard electric socket was almost 0. I was shocked (pun intended!) when I measured the EMF near my microwave oven – it went off the scale! (Over 199 mili-Gauss). Now that’s what I call nuking my food!

Well, you are probably wondering what the EMF measured at this power sub-station, here it is: the highest EMF field measured was 4.7 mili-Gauss. So, it is more dangerous for me to stand near my microwave while I nuke my food than to live near here, by about a factor of 50 - Interesting!

So, to answer the question I raised in the title of this GeoCache, “Does this GeoCache hum?” The answer -- only when it doesn’t know the words!

Be safe-Enjoy the cache!

Its been a long hot summer in Texas, I've been trying to get out and do a caching trip a couple of times this summer, but it never worked out. Finally managed to get a week off, and am so happy to be out here in Colorado. The weather if perfect, and there is a load of caches that need my name on Smile Thanks so much for the hide RckMtnMic, I really enjoyed finiding this cache!

Grabbing a bunch for Hidden Creatures

Interesting. We have measured the mG at our house, and it gets is high as 5 to 10 mG from a powerline behind our house. Hard to imagine this would be less

Some may call me seriously mentally ill. Some may state that I am in a state of mind that prevents social interaction. Some may say I am in a state of mind that prevents normal perception and or behavior. I prefer to say that I tend to do the same thing over and over again, but I expect different results. That being said, I believe we only live one life and I am trying to make the best of it. I thank you, RckMtnMic for placing a fun geocache to fuel my "insanity" or addiction as I call it. I appreciate you bringing me here so that I can try and sign my alias on a piece of paper that you have hidden.

I look forward to finding more of your geocaches. I also look forward to potentially finding geocaches with you one day and sharing stories of our insanity... I mean hobby or addiction? Cheers!

I’ve got to put it out there – when we all are cursing the geo marketers for their wicked souvenir challenges, remember all the great fun and time connecting with other geocachers that occurred and probably wouldn’t have otherwise. PayMeCache and I were working the plan for Day 3 of the Hidden Creatures challenge {the comedy in that statement is that “the plan” was to get it all done on Friday….and then Saturday…and here we are now on Sunday…} when the5millers reaches out in a panic that he might not make it to the coveted World Turtle Souvenir. [YEAH, and why is it a TURTLE gets top billing and all you need for the Unicorn is 5 finds????? – anyway, I digress} So PMC strongly encourages the fine art of the power-trail to the5millers and before long everyone has earned their complete set of Hidden Creature Souvenirs!!! I need to create a PayMeCache souvenir, because without him, we would be out a considerable number of geocaching logs!! TFTC
