When I was young I loved to scare people in the dark and make up stories about monsters. I still love to scare people. With this cache, I can do both. Ready for a ghostly adventure? No need to visit the starting coordinates unless you’re curious.
This cache requires going off trail, and using natural bridges to cross a small stream.
On February 9, 1941, well respected Arlo Chesterfield and his troubled 16 year old daughter, Lenora, were driving eastbound back, to their farmhouse, after an evening in the “big city.” As they crested a hill on Quincy Road, they swerved off the road, traveling nearly a quarter mile along Mason’s creek. Around 2 am a passing sheriff noticed skid marks going off the road and found the 1936 Buick Series 40 severely damaged. Finley had passed and young Lenora was unconscious, suffering from exposure and multiple fractures. At the hospital, Lenora recounted that her father swerved to avoid hitting the ghost of Finley Schmidt. Although old man Finley had passed 3 weeks before the accident, Lenora claimed that they both saw his ghostly figure. Her father swerved to avoid the old man, and lost control of the vehicle. Lenora was hospitalized for 4 months and was left permanently crippled and horribly disfigured. Swirling rumors around the small town whispered of conspiracy and insanity. Behind Lenora’s back, friends speculated that she imagined the ghost, or even worse, grabbed the steering wheel to kill them both. Lenora lived with her mother until she unexpectedly died of pneumonia at the young age of 25. Two months after her death, three of Lenora’s classmates came to authorities with the truth. A week before the accident, they plotted and told Lenora that they had seen Finley’s ghost. On the day of the accident, they stuffed a three piece suit with hay and held it up, near the road as Arlo and Lenora approached. After the thunderous crash, the boys ran home and never checked on the wreck.
After both Arloo and Lenora were dead, the boys, Thompson, Clarence, and Percy, though that they had gotten away with it, so they began to brag. Newly elected Sheriff Robertson promised to re-open the case and have the boys, who were now in their 20’s, tried and sent to prison.
However, on July 5, 1950, after a night of heavy drinking, all three men were killed when their brakes failed and they ran into a train. Rumor has it that you can hear Lenora singing during the sunlight and the droning moans of her killers at dusk. Now visit the scene and see for yourself.
Arlo Chesterfield’s Buick motor still sits in the pasture at the scene of the accident. Find the motor, then walk 258’ southeast (at bearing 112) to find the container. The cache is against a fence post, covered by a section of log.
