Sixth in a series of caches called "Chasing the Rails" of The Rio Grande Southern Railroad.

This Cache is right on the old Rail Bed. There is a log and small items, room for small TB's. PLEASE Replace how you found it or better, well covered is how I placed it. Thank You!

From where you are the bed wraps around the corner, most of the bed here has the fence on it, the bed then goes off into private land and finds it's way to Mancos. As you leave this cache and head West on HWY 160 to Mancos you are on the rail bed, then take the old road into Mancos to follow the bed.

If any one ask what you are doing. You are "Chasing the Rails" of The Rio Grande Southern Railroad of course.

Some YouTube Clips I Found.. From the Cab of the Gallaping Goose and the Galloping Goose Running the Track Near Durango, Co

The Rio Grande Southern was one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railroads in the world. It provided heavy transportation service for the west side of the San Juan mountains and traveled through spectacular scenery that, prior to the railroad, was only accessible by the most determined traveler using horses, wagons, or even basic foot power.

The Rio Grande Southern Railroad (RGS) ran from Durango to Ridgway in the western part of the US state of Colorado. Its right of way can be traced by going west from Durango to Mancos, then to Dolores, north across Lizard Head Pass (10,222') to Placerville, with the final leg to Ridgway.

The route passed over Dallas Divide west of Ridgway and over Lizard Head Pass north of Rico. The most famous structure on the route was the Ophir Loop near Ophir. At this point the railroad was built up a narrow mountain valley and looped back up the other side to gain elevation over several tall trestles.

The RGS filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission for abandonment on 24 April 1952.

Another in this series done. This is really neat bit of local history. It's fun to be out on this old rail line. Thanks.

Nice bit of history—TFTC! I’ve been on other stretches of this railroad bed, fun to visit a new stretch. Thanks for a reason to get out with the family on a warm, spring day!

Great place for a cache. Very surprised that so few cachers have bothered to get this one. It is only a couple of miles from route 160, half on pavement and half on good gravel. This short drive gets you up into the ponderosas near a lovely meadow. Snow would make it exceedingly difficult, but in this snow drought year in SW Colorado it is an easy grab. Fun to stand on the old D&RGS bed and imagine the work required to bring the rails over Hesperus and Mancos hills. TFTC

Nice to get up here and see the grade. It's not as obvious now with the fence and rocks blocking it. From the logsheet I thought I was getting this off the 2017 lonely list but I think someone signed the back. Glad you found this bit of non SJNF to use. Looks like one sneaked by that restriction recently.ToungeOut
Thanks for putting one here!
