The cache is located at the dried up hole in the ground called Ghost Lake. The lake is really a ghost now as there hasn't been much water in it for years. When we first started coming to Creede in the 80's the lake would be full of water (you can see the water line on the big boulders) and crystal clear. Unfortunately, it was being fed from a leak in the dam for the Santa Maria reservoir, and they finally got the dam fixed about ten years ago or so. Since then, Ghost Lake and the other lakes down the valley that you passed on the way in all dried up. We always use the trip down the valley as a nice bike ride or walk while staying at the cabin.

The road through the valley is a dirt road that has very rough spots. A four wheel vehicle is recommended for the last few hundred feet of the road. At various times in the year, the county does grade parts of the road and it is much smoother for a short time.

Keep your eyes open for Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep. There is a herd in the area that can be seen occasionally.

Oh, and the name Ghost Lake does not come from the fact that it is dry, but from all the dead trees around it that give it a ghostly look. I am thinking that was back in the day when most of the dead tree trunks were still standing. These days, they are all on the ground and piled up in the SW corner of the depression.

Visited the lake on this trip again. There is a new leak in the reservoir damn and water is flowing down the valley freely again. Ghost Lake is higher than I have ever seen it. The cache is still above the water but is more difficult to get to around the waters edge. The lower lake is also full and is now stocked with fish.

Not an easy find but worth it in the end. We have looked for this cache on 3 separate trips to Creede and we finally found it!
