This cache is in honor of Charger and Moses, the first horse and mule to enter Staunton State Park on opening day to the public. We rode these great boys to the cache site on the opening day of Staunton State Park. This newest state parks has many many miles of great equestrian trails that also connect to Pike National Forest at the northeast part of the park (off the Bugling Elk Trail)You are looking for a green bison tube in a camoed crocheted sleeve. It is quite a hike up (easier ride!) either the Mason Creek Trail or Staunton Ranch Trail to the Old Mill Trail. This cache is just off the Mason Creek Trail near the junction with the Old Mill Trail. Please note that horses and bikes are not allowed on the Old Mill Trail.
This cache is located within Staunton State Park, which has one public entrance along S. Elk Creek Road, six miles west of Conifer, about 1.5 miles off U.S. Highway 285. Parking along either side of S. Elk Creek Road and Upper Ranch Road adjacent to the park boundary is prohibited. All vehicles entering the park must have a daily park pass ($7) or a CO state park annual pass. Hours of operation vary by season, and no overnight parking is permitted. During summer weekends, the park may reach capacity, and cars are allowed to enter only if a parking space is available. Horse trailers are admitted if space is available for parking trailers. Information about the park can be found at http://www.cpw.state.co.us/placestogo/parks/staunton . All visitors must follow park rules and regulations. These include dogs on leash at all times, clean up after pets, travel on developed trails, no fires away from the developed area, leave no trace, respect areas closed for resource management, and be careful around wildlife (especially mountain lions, coyotes, and black bears). Fishing is allowed in park waters, but license and limit regulations must be followed. No motorized vehicles are allowed on trails. Pack your own trash out of the back country, and trash receptacles are located near the parking areas. Also, be prepared for changing weather, bring adequate water and footwear, and trails may be snow-covered or icy in winter.

11/08/2017 By WhiskeyBit What a great hide. So glad we had this cache to motivate us to get to the top of Old Mill. TFTC! (Ps as a knitter I appreciate the crocheted sleeve!)
10/04/2017 By wildkatco We have been meaning to ride our horses at Staunton since it opened. Today we took the opportunity, hoping to pick up a cache or two and finish the earth cache we started last July. Unfortunately this is the only cache for the day because we got a late start. Fortunately this cache took us to a part of the park we haven't seen before, and it was a beautiful day for a ride today. Many of the aspens are at their peak, with some that are still green. The weather was perfect and we met another local rider on the trail. Although we only saw 5 other horseback riders on the trail, the equestrian parking lot was full. There were also many hikers and bikers for a Wednesday. At the GZ the GPS coords were bouncing all over the place. Our coords were between 30 - 50 ft. off, so it took some looking to locate this one. Thank you for the hint, we might not have found it otherwise. Great camo in this location. Thank you for placing this cache so that we can play! I'll give it a favorite for bringing us up this way to enjoy the aspens and views!
