Unless you have Technical gear, I wouldn`t try going for this straight up....there are goat trails galore and no technical gear is required...
...I have been going up and down Shelf road for about 20 years...and have been dreaming of putting a cache up here on what I call the Needle ever since I started geocaching....some people call it Window Rock...others call it the Needle...it really doesn`t have a name, but you will recognize it when you see it....depending on how you approach it, it can be very challenging to strenuous.....I would recomend mountain goat gear....long sleeves, long pants, good rock climbing shoes...the usual for a mountain hike....the hike itself took the hubby and I 35 minutes one way...we aren`t young whippersnappers though, so it took us a little bit of time...  ....We bouldered and rock climbed our way up for the challenge, and took the slightly easier goat trail down....I would not recommend this for young children or in rain or snow....the cache is not at the Needle itself, but is higher up away from the well traveled paths.... I recommend going to the needle first, then finding the trail that goes further up...please place back exactly as found, so other people, animals and weather don`t get to it...I hope you enjoy the adventure!...

What an amazing climb at an amazing place. We found a route that worked, very vertical. We made it to the top and of course found the cache. Amazing views.

Not exactly high on my list of favorite terrains and for some strange reason I became overly-concerned about rattlesnakes. But it was all worth it in the end. Amazing view and a very well-stocked container. Thank you for bringing us up to a spot we admired back in April 2011 on our way to Big Red Rock.

We've driven this road several times in search of caches and have always admired the Eye. It's great to see a cache there. Estes01 and I tackled the Eye today as the weather turned threatening. But we made it to the cache and were back in the car before the heavens really opened up. We ascended 2 gullies south of the cache and descended just south of the cache. Of the two, the closer gully is easier as long as you can Trust Your Shoes on the sloping sandstone. A favorite for sure. TFTC!
