Cokedale, Colorado- another reminder of our rich history in Coal Mining. What makes this coal mine unique is that the residents were given the option to buy their houses when the mine shut down. Rarely did this happen in Colorado. For this reason, Cokedale never became a ghost town.

As a formal coal mining town, Cokedale was settled in 1906. At its largest it only had a population of 1500.When the mine shut down in 1948 the population slowly dwindled. It now only sits at 130. At its peak, the town could produce 1500 tons of coal from their mines and 800 tons of coke from their ovens. You can still see the remains of their 350 coke ovens across the street.
