In order to reach the cache a fairly long hike is required. Good footware appropriate for mountain hiking is recommended. As with any extended hike, carry enough water and avoid snakes. Finding the cache once at the cache site should not be a problem.
Lagniappe (lan yap) n. Cajun, a small unexpected bonus or gift given to someone.

This is more of a hike with a cache than a cache with a hike, hence its name. The hike is about 4.5 miles roundtrip with about 900' elevation gain from the parking area to the cache site. This is not a cache and dash situation. Plan on 2-1/2 hours as an average. Your mileage may vary.

While in use, the Apex Trail provided access to the gold fields of Central City from the plains. The trail ascended Apex Gulch from near its confluence with Lena Gulch below present day Heritage Square. When Heritage Square was constructed, all signs of the town that had marked the beginning of the trail were wiped out. Very little remains of the trail which fell into disuse after it was wiped out by flood waters from a heavy summer cloudburst well over 100 years ago. Today it is a prime spot for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders with over 10 miles of well maintained trails. While you are on the trails, make note of the tolls that were charged to use the toll road in terms of 1869 dollars and enjoy the views that present themselves to you.

The cache is a log only 35mm film canister. Bring your own writing stick. The cache is located on the Grubstake Loop, a side trail to the main Apex Trail. The cache is environmentally friendly and is situated about 12 feet from a well maintained trail. To get to the cache absolutely no brushwhacking is necessary nor does a blade a grass need to be walked on. The cache can be clearly seen without disturbing anything, you just need to be slightly off the trail to view it. PLEASE REPLACE THE CACHE SO THAT IT CAN BE SPOTTED WHILE STANDING ON THE TRAIL and yet be somewhat protected from the weather.

Parking in the lower Heritage Square parking lot is at N39 42.962', W105 12.590'. Brochures can be obtained and large scale map viewed at N39 42.940', W105 12.654'.

Found both containers here. Combined the logs into one bag and replaced in the container that made sense based on the description. Took the other container with us, left nothing, signed the log. Thanks for the cache.

Took on about 6 miles total today and was able to find 7/10 caches. I suspect that the snow was the reason for the 3 DNFs though, so I am sure that I will be back in the spring to redeem myself. As far as the trails go, they were a mix of clear and dry, muddy and very slippery, and icy and snow packed. Microspikes came in handy and I was glad I brought them along even though I had to put them on and take them off at least 6 times. Thanks for all of the caches.

First find an a new park for us. Here more for the hiking than the caching, will need a couple more visits to finish. Wondering if there are two containers here - this one had about half of the 2016 and 2017 finders on the log sheet and none of the other 2018 finders. TFTC

It took longer than normal to find this one, and I was concerned about the phone battery draining away. Finally found it a little higher off the ground than expected. TFTC!

The log was unsignable. The lid was partially off. The log has been ruined and I think a spider took up residence. Tftc!

The hint helped narrow down the search. Beware where you put hands and knees. There are cacti under the pine needles. TFTC

I picked this nice cache up while doing a short hike in Apex Park. This was my first time here, and I really enjoyed the trails. The tree cover and overcast skies made for a very cool and enjoyable hike. I was very happy to make the find on this cache with no drama, despite the string of recent DNFs. The clue was helpful during my hunt. Thanks to the CO for the nice placement, fun hunt, brining me to the Park, and keeping this old one in play. TFTC.

This is the only cache of the day we searched for and could not find. Based on the description, it seems that it should be fairly easy.

No luck on this one today. But there was a nearby animal bone of some sort the Geodoodle wanted to take as a consolation prize...

I think I found the original cache deep into a rock crevice. Last log was 2014. I signed and replaced. Thank you for placing this cache and helping to keep our recreation going.
