Conrad

This is number twenty-two in a series of historical points within Douglas County Colorado.

This is the grave of Conrad Moschel.

Conrad Moschel was serving in Company M of the Colorado Cavalry who were stationed at California Ranch near Franktown.

In August of 1864 he was detailed with Lawrence Welty, George Engl, and Casper Courts to recover Engl's valuable shorthorn herd from the Lake Gulch area.

While gathering the herd the men were attacked by about thirty Indians. Everyone survived the attack and made it safely back to California Ranch except Conrad Moschel. His body was found about a week later halfway up the bluffs opposite Engl's Ranch. Circling magpies led the search party to it. He had been shot in the back with an arrow, a gunshot wound to the head and had been scalped.

He was buried where he was found and a carved memorial is in the rock cliff above the grave. A granite tombstone was later added to the head of the grave.

This among other killings is what prompted Colonel Chivington's infamous massacre of Indians at Sand Creek in the same year.

You can park along the road near the grave. The grave is on private property but the container isn't.

Thanks Geocaching Colorado for the Geocache of the Month Award, as the second series to win!

Today, during the “You might be an Adrenaline Junkie if…” challenge, I came down to a nearby powertrail to grab a bunch of points. On the way back, I saw this one. Glad I stopped. Seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Tftc!

Out and about caching and exploring with the geocacher extraordinaire known throughout the land as none other than the lovable and cuddly herndonrd. Today our goal was to explore Castlewood Canyon and grab whatever caches we could find.

This was one of our primary targets for the day, and we stopped to get it even though herndonrd had found it before. He is so kind.

This was a normal caching experience for me, as I watched herndonrd find the container while I was looking in all the wrong places. Hooray! After I signed the log and put everything back in place, we were back in the car and driving off to the next one. Thanks for the fun hide and for your contribution to a great day of caching.

P. S. No animals (including humans or PayMeCache) were harmed in the writing of this log.

P. P. S. Favorite point for the history.

Thanks for the cache. Log was damp and I didn't sign in. Gorgeous spot. Just explored the canyon trails to the north. Lovely.

Out with the Ohio GeoBugs to get some more of the Douglas series. Very interesting bit of history. I would have never known about it without this cache. I also loved the drive through this area. I had thought about driving it some time ago but this motivated me. TFTC!

Out caching for the day with Colorado GeoDemon. Our goal was to find some more of the virtuals in the Douglas County series, some traditionals, a puzzle or two and do a power trail. When we were finished we had gone 57/58. A gorgeous day to be out caching.

Our first cache of the morning. We arrived at GZ to find muggles in the form of cows. They took off as we approached. An easy find. All is well. Thanks for the fun and the cache,

My muggle friend/coworker is in town and wanted to see some of the beauty Castle Rock has to offer so we headed to the canyon. I was surprised that I had not found this cache yet so it made for a fun stop. All is well with the cache and log here.

Found GC12T9A - Douglas #23 - Conrad Moschel, on October 25, 2017 using Cachly for iOS.

Some may call me seriously mentally ill. Some may state that I am in a state of mind that prevents social interaction. Some may say I am in a state of mind that prevents normal perception and or behavior. I prefer to say that I tend to do the same thing over and over again, but I expect different results. That being said, I believe we only live one life and I am trying to make the best of it. I thank you, Jim Reeb for placing a fun geocache to fuel my "insanity" or addiction as I call it. I appreciate you bringing me here so that I can sign my alias on a piece of paper that you have hidden.

I look forward to finding more of your geocaches. I also look forward to potentially finding geocaches with you one day and sharing stories of our insanity... I mean hobby or addiction? Cheers!
