Second in a series of caches called "Chasing the Rails" of The Rio Grande Southern Railroad.

Log ONLY bring sharp pencil. PLEASE Replace as you found. Thank You!.

Stay on the county road easement!!! DO NOT Cross ANY Fence Lines. That is UTE Mountain Tribal Land. Keep Out!!

Cache is NOT on the fence, keep an eye on pets and kids..

Oh, if someone does question you, remember, You are "Chasing the Rails" of The Rio Grande Southern Railroad of course.

Standing at the cache you are standing on the old bed and looking to the NW there under the pine you can see a mound of dirt, that is the bed and looking to the SE under that large pine across the street you can see a clearing down thru there, that too is the bed. From where you are to the NW the tracks went to Hesperus Station and to the SE wrapped around Pine Ridge and down into Shanandoha.

The Rio Grande Southern was one of the most spectacular narrow gauge railroads in the world. It provided heavy transportation service for the west side of the San Juan mountains and traveled through spectacular scenery that, prior to the railroad, was only accessible by the most determined traveler using horses, wagons, or even basic foot power.

The Rio Grande Southern Railroad (RGS) ran from Durango to Ridgway in the western part of the US state of Colorado. Its right of way can be traced by going west from Durango to Mancos, then to Dolores, north across Lizard Head Pass (10,222') to Placerville, with the final leg to Ridgway.

The route passed over Dallas Divide west of Ridgway and over Lizard Head Pass north of Rico. The most famous structure on the route was the Ophir Loop near Ophir. At this point the railroad was built up a narrow mountain valley and looped back up the other side to gain elevation over several tall trestles.

The RGS filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission for abandonment on 24 April 1952.

We were out looking for Hidden Creatures and as this was on our way we stopped here. Thanks for another cache in the D&RGS series. I like to think about that old rail line.

This was a first for us - we found the cache at exactly the same time...but reached in to different places. There were two! Went back over the logs and noted that the CO couldn't find the original, and so added a new one. Well, they are both there, so to rightfully claim this cache we think you should find both! They are certainly no more than five feet apart. The older one was very difficult to open as it had been cross-threaded, but should be no problem now. TFTC
