Beautiful area. Be sure to watch for wildlife and the locals farming with draft horses.Legend has it that 11 year old Jim, keeping with traditions of the time, (1940's) was out hunting rabbits, a welcome addition to the family dinner table, no doubt. An accident occured in which young Jim's arm was badly injured. Upon returning home, his family sent someone on horseback to Monte Vista for a doctor, about a 24 mile round trip. When they returned without the doctor, someone else was dispatched to Alamosa, approximately 36 miles to and fro. When the doctor finally arrived it was determined that the arm could not be saved and was therefore removed. Young Jim's arm was then buried in this hastily plotted cemetery, the first interment at this location. Jim went on to lead a long and fruitful life and upon his death was reunited with his arm.
