Sunset City Gulch is a gulch that runs south from Fremont County Road 28 at mile market 12.  There is an old mining road that is not used any more and can provide a good place to ATV or walk the 1.9 miles, but sometimes the wash is much easier.  The ammo box cache is about 30' from an old mining claim sign and just beyond where the ATV trail stops.

Though never an actual established city (and consequently ghost town), Sunset City has never been officially recognized by the state or federal governments except as a site on a map. Along with East Sunset City down the road, they started out more as stage stops for travelers to eat and rest and tend to tired horses along the Copper Gulch Stage Line between Cañon City and Silver Cliff around 1879.  Please read the full description on the Senset City Cache.

This area of the county remains as open range and free-grazing cattle are abundant on the road, so use caution. During rainy days, be advised of flash flooding and remember to immediately climb uphill if you find yourself caught in one.

Please take out any trash that you see we don't want BLM to close this beautiful area, because we are not picking up after ourselves.

I love it when I find an ammo can at the end of a two mile hike. This was a quick find thanks to good coordinates. I left a travel bug (Lonely Traveler # 18) and some Get Out of Hell Free cards. This is a great container and is loaded with swag. The hike up here was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. The elevation change is mostly gentle and the scenery is spectacular. This one gets a favorite point. Thanks!

Beautiful, sunny August day. Followed the trail of fresh cow patties until I ran into Bossie herself on the trail. Nice little hike in and interesting to see the prospecting that went on back then. Cache in good shape. Thanks.

All of the caches in this little wilderness study area were fantastic. We decided to take the advantage of a nice day to find them. Once we found the sign, finding the cache was no problem. Cache is in good shape, aside from some cobwebs. We picked up the TB Old Mose and a couple of figurines, and left two nickels, a few colored rocks, and some beads. SL, TFTC!

Found on a warm Saturday cache run with OF-Erad...Saw that this was the last cache up the line but didn't look forward to the extra distance and altitude gain but also didn't want to come back to make the full hike all over again so off we went to the headwaters of the little creek and quickly located the cache which appears to be a very popular spot for the local spider population...TFTC SL

I had the proverbial carrot in front of my husband's nose. Kept telling him "just a little farther, just a little farther. Old mose trackable brought up bear subject. Plenty of poo to prove their presence but luckily no encounter. Tftc
