Discover and enjoy a portion of the Delta story in its murals
The wealth of murals in Delta, Colorado, created by local artists celebrates the heritage of this community. Most are located along Main Street. This series is numbered in the order in which the murals were painted.
It all started in 1986 when the city was awarded funds for an urban renewal project. A portion of these funds were set aside to begin the “mural project”. The success of this project has led to the expansion of the Delta Public Art Committee which is currently continuing the mural project and initiating a new program for sculpture and other 3 dimensional media art in public places.
In this series of multi-caches, the coordinates given are a virtual (the mural) from which you will gather information to find the second stage which will contain the log to be signed. The second stage has a connection to the first, perhaps only in the owners’ minds, but can you read our minds?
News has always been important to the citizens of Delta, CO. The town was incorporated under the name Uncompahgre, on February 11, 1882 with a population of 470. The name was soon changed to Delta, because of its location on the delta of the Uncompahgre and Gunnison Rivers - as well as the difficulty of spelling the name! In the very next year, a newspaper was being published. Archives of Delta County Historical Society at 251 Meeker Street in Delta contain many hardcopy and/or micro film of the following:
Delta Chief 1883-1885
Delta Independent 1886-1939
Delta County Independent 1940 - present
The Delta County Laborer 1897 – 1911
Delta County Tribune 1897-1917
The Delta County Independent building exterior wall displays the bright mural at 1st stage GZ which depicts those early days of news-papering and printing. A little known factoid about the painting is that the newsboy in the foreground is a self portrait of the artist, Seth Weber, when he was that age. Seth also painted the Train Station ?C of M #14 - GC5RCH3? in which he again provides a self portrait of himself as a young man - prominent figure in foreground. See if you can see the similarities between the two!
Recent history: In the mid 1980’s, the 100 year old paper seemed to have lost its focus. It was owned by a big newspaper chain, and was no longer a profitable operation.
In 1987 the newspaper was purchased and became a family operation with Mom and Pop as co publishers and their four children forming the management team. They apparently managed to find what works in Delta County, for this bringer of news is still going strong today. As a parent and an avid “scrapbooker”, I wonder if the continued life of this weekly county paper may be linked to the number of names and faces that can be proudly displayed on bulletin boards and in scrapbooks of so many of us across Delta County.
