On Veterans Day, November 11, 2017, Estes Park residents and guests celebrated the dedication of a new Estes Park Veterans Monument. The monument was first envisioned by WWII Navy veteran, Laverne (Vern) Mertz. Vern moved the project forward by recruiting the Honorable Gary Brown, a local judge and retired Army veteran, and local volunteer extraordinaire Carey Stevanus, as the initial committee volunteers. Vern, Gary, and Carey had worked together as members of the Estes Park Honor Flight Committee. After receiving permission from the Estes Park Town Board of Trustees for the project, more volunteers were recruited and the Estes Park Veterans Monument Committee was formed. The dream of a monument honoring veterans became a reality through the work of the committee members and support from our generous mountain community, fundraising over $100,000 in just one year for the project. This beautiful monument provides veterans and others a place to reflect and honor all veterans of military service, past and present. Parking is available at the Estes Park Visitors Center. Permission for the placement of this geocache was given by the Town of Estes Park. Please be discreet. Heavy muggle area.
