The town of Gebhard was established by the Union Pacific Railroad about 1876, but changed its name to Agate in 1882.

Although "Gebhard" was established by the UPRR, the town of Agate existed, by that name, as a locality used by local ranchers prior to the construction of the railroad.

The town's name most probably comes from an "A-gate" - a wooden gate with an "A"-shaped cross-brace, but is sometimes claimed to be named for agate found in the area.

The northeastern most community in Elbert County, Agate is a ranching community and the home of Agate School District 300, one of the smallest school districts in Colorado.

The Gebhard Post Office opened on April 8, 1881

The school, post office, and a number of businesses and homes are located east of the tracks, and a grain elevator and a few houses to the west of the tracks.

The Meadowlark cooperative, a farming community located in the greater Agate area was incorporated in 2010, has the only private free land program in the United States

Traveling along with purpletiger, seeing some new sights. She is our navigator for both the basic roadtrip and for heading tti caches. This one sounded interesting so we took another detour to find it. Made the find quickly but i disturbed an ant colony when i came back! Fortunately purpletiger noticed where i was standing and got me moved quickly. Interesting history of the place! Thanks for the story and cache.

So every year the Jersey Guys set out on a caching adventure. This year we flew out to Denver, CO and drove to 12 states, covered over 3400 miles, grabbed a few of the older caches along with the oldest in MINGO. We had eight days to do it and saw a lot of cool country. Our path took us from Denver to WY, Utah, Idaho, Montana, ND, SD, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Missou11060ri and then Kansas, back to Denver. It was a great trip and we found a lot of caches along the way. We thank everyone who placed them, when possible we replaced missing or broken cache containers. The rest of the group posted most of their logs along the way so I hope no one minds this GSAK log. I will go back as needed and supply favorite points as well as any needed photos or answers. Thanks again for all you have done to keep our adventures fun and exciting by supplying and maintaining so many fun hides.

What an adventure! I joined up with KalahariFox in Denver to stay with some friends out that way. We are Athens, GA based! Besides catching up with old friends, we decided to make a caching adventure out of the trip (duh.). We ended up grabbing many caches (some very desirable ones!) in CO, KS, and NE during our stay. My favorite part is always seeing what kind of wildlife we encounter. This trip we ended up seeing a pronghorn, prairie dogs, turkey vultures and even a prairie rattlesnake! So neat! Thanks for helping make this trip a total delight :)

This was my very first CO cache! I was so excited! The grasshoppers gave me a little jumping display with every step haha. Happy smiley!

The grasshoppers were absolutely everywhere as Liz made her way through the grass to the cache. First stop of the day driving east from Denver!

I was out in Denver for a work conference (my first time in the area) and was joined by Lizzybeth13 to spend a few extra days visiting friends and finding caches. Before flying out, I considered, just how close would I be to Mingo, that legendary oldest active cache? It was about a 3:30h drive and that was close enough for me! Today's trip took us out to Kansas to find said cache and a selection of others on the way, then up to Nebraska simply because I never yet had occasion to visit the state. Conditions were clear and hot. We managed to see some wildlife (as I always hope we do) including pronghorn, prairie chickens, a ton of turkey vultures, and plenty of prairie dogs. It was a beautiful (if mostly flat) drive, and a successful day for caching. Thanks for placing this one 🦊
