Ammo Can on Peak 8. My GPS recorded 13,013 feet, but the "official elevation" of Peak 8 is 12,987 feet. See Spoiler Photos.
During ski season, you can take Colorado Super Chair or Peak 8 Super Connect about half way. Then you have to ski Frosty's Freeway to 6 Chair. From here, it's all Black Diamond to get out, so know what you are getting yourself into. Take 6 Chair to Imperial Express Super Chair (the highest chair lift in North America). That takes you to within 150 vertical feet of the cache. You will have to hoof it up to the top. Plan to ski down, but from here it is Double Black, mostly for the initial sketchy drop off the cornice. Cache is in the rocks just inside the ski area, but a little north of the very tip top of the peak. 30 cal Ammo Can. I hid this in winter after some good snow. The rocks were clear from being wind blown, by north winds. You may have to poke around with a ski pole. In summer I would appreciate any maintenance a finder could do to make the can more secure without covering it completely. I want this to be found. The rocks were pretty frozen, so I could not place this exactly as I wish I could. The first summer finder provided me a spoiler shot. Take a look.
In Summer a hike to the summit of Peak 8 will require a 6 mile round trip with 3000 ft of vertical. From the base of the mountain, you can choose your own route through the maze of the ski runs to reach the “Vista Haus” building at 11200 ft. You can then follow Peak 8’s southeastern ridgeline to reach the summit. This is a straight forward hike/climb that does not need much more description. The Colorado Super Chair is often operational in summer which gets you to the "Vista Haus." Call the resort in advance to find out prices and schedules. That would save some major time and distance on your feet.
Alternate Summer Route:
By the 4th of July or so you should be able to make it to the intersection of Peak 10 Road (Co Road 750 or 751, Depending on your Map) in a high clearance vehicle. One of my waypoints is that intersection. Park at the Wheeler Trail junction [N 39° 27.181 W 106° 05.696] at about 12,200 and walk the trail from there to the saddle between Peak 8 and 9. From the saddle follow the ridge to the top of Peak 8. 5 miles round trip with about 1200 feet of elevation gain.
