Takes more than an hour  Scenic view  Dangerous Animals  Parking available  Bicycles  Medium hike (1km-10km)

Hidden above Witches' Canyon is an interesting sight...you can eye it for yourself by following a single track mountain bike trail for about 1.3 miles from a rough 2WD accessible parking area or slightly less if you have 4WD. This cache is just a short distance off the well marked trail. It is a pleasant walk or better bike ride but be sure to wear sturdy footwear as many cacti are scattered along the hillside and rattlesnakes have been spotted nearby in warmer months. Please stay on the trail and practice Leave No Trace.

This is a great cache in all regards. The description of the route is spot on, and the trail easy to follow. We hiked, but mountain biking would be excellent too. The terrain is very interesting, with a pretty good proportion of the trail running right on top of outcrops of welded tuff. Right now, and probably for the next three weeks or so, the flower bloom is very good. Yucca and claret cups are the stars, but yellow prickly pear, sky blue penstemons, New Mexico butterweed, puccoon, paperflower, and globemallow are doing well with all the moisture this winter and spring. There are two routes to Witches Canyon, both of which we drove. The southern one seemed more rocky and required a bit more clearance than the northern road which branches off the way into Penitente Canyon right after it leaves the gravel superhighway linking Del Norte and La Garita. The last little bit down into the canyon is indeed rough and 4WD for the trip back up is helpful. Many thanks to marmotandgoatcachers for placing this one. Hard to believe that it has been waiting so long for an FTF. We are conservative with FPs, but Eye Over the Valley gets one for sure.
