Cache is a camoflauged can that I won at the Pi-day event in Conifer a few weekends ago. I'm glad I could place it local to the Confer community and tell a little history about this place as well. Enjoy
For years, the dirt road to the west of this location doubled as the private airstrip to the namesake of this park. The FAA still shows it on aeronautical sectional charts and in databases as 5CO6. However, these days it is listed as "Meyer Ranch Airport (Historic)". Before fall 2010, one could hardly drive by on US285 without noticing the picturesque yellow ranch house and the 1968 Cessna 180 pointing nose out of the barn to its left. The Midway House and the Plane in the Barn were landmarks to this community and an icon for mountain living in Conifer Colorado.
On August 10 2010, the Plane in the Barn, took off for the last time from 5CO6. At age 93, it's long time owner and pilot watched with about 300 others as it took off for a new home on the Western slope where it will be kept for his great grandson to learn to fly it. According to the news articles it flew over to the sound of bagpipes playing an old Irish tune.
Isn't this a great place?
