A two-part cache in Welchester Tree Grant Park, a Jefferson County Open Space, commemorates a delightful children’s book written more than 100 years ago. It might be tricky to get good satellite locks in the summer when the trees are full of foliage. The Hollow Tree and Deep Woods Book, written in 1898 by Albert Bigelow Paine, tells the adventures of three animal friends, Mr. Crow, Mr. ‘Coon, and Mr. ‘Possum, who “lived together in three big hollow branches of a great Hollow Tree in the Big Deep Woods…” The three friends used to gather in the parlor downstairs to eat lunch, talk, and “pitch the bones under the table…”
Waypoint #1 is similar to the forest home of the three friends. In a dwelling a lot like this, Mr. Crow, Mr. ‘Coon, and Mr. ‘Possum entertained their friends Mr. Jack Rabbit and Mr. Turtle in the downstairs parlor one fine April day. “Mr. Crow was the best cook anywhere… [he planned to bake] …chicken pie and hot biscuits with maple syrup… [and then] hurried out and got the pair of pink glass vases that Mr. ‘Coon had given him… and put the flowers in them for the table…”
What was the hollow tree was cut down recently but the parlor remains. (8/2014)
You will enjoy the second part of the cache most if you start from the log bench at N 39 degrees 43.799 minutes, W 105 degrees 08.661 minutes and walk east on the trail through the Big Deep Woods. (Well, OK, the woods are not really that deep; we’re in suburbia, after all!) On a path like this Mr. ‘Coon, Mr. ‘Possum, and Mr. Jack Rabbit strolled one evening when they “…walked and walked, till by and by they got to the edge of the world and sat down and hung their feet over and talked and looked at the full moon that was just rising.”
At Waypoint #2, you’ll find the treasure – not the edge of the world where the three friends shared their stories, but instead the cache inhabited by another set of animal pals. No digging through dirt is needed to find the cache - it's well hidden but not underground. If you want to trade, please stay with the animal theme. The first arrivals at this Deep Woods party are a raccoon, a rabbit, a turtle, a lion, a zebra, a gorilla, an elephant, a stegosaurus, a triceratops, a cat, a pig, and two teddy bears.
We hope you enjoyed your walk through the Big Deep Woods. Now that you’ve met Mr. Crow, Mr. ‘Coon, and Mr. ‘Possum, you may want to read more about their adventures in The Hollow Tree and Deep Woods Book, The Hollow Tree Snowed-In Book, and Hollow Tree Nights and Days, all written by Albert Bigelow Paine and illustrated by J. M. Conde. The books are often out of print but you can find them in used bookstores, buy them on the internet, or borrow them through interlibrary loans.
[Waypoint #1] Look in the hollow tree’s parlor if you Wood. [Waypoint #2] Search about eight feet from the trail and you’ll Log the cache.

04/30/2019 By puzzle player I have increased the terrain difficulty by 1/2 point in recognition on the need now to scramble partly down a ditch bank. Before the "hollow tree" was cut down and the stump removed, no scrambling had been necessary.
04/30/2019 By puzzle player I've checked way points 1 and 2. All is in order.
03/07/2019 By kitt5 Although very muddy mixed with slush from yesterday's snow, I was able to find WP1 while slipping down the muddy embankment. Searched for WP2 until dark. Figured gz would be fairly easy since there where no leaves on the trees. Broadened my search area by 30 ft radius, but no luck.
12/21/2018 By puzzle player I checked both way point and final. All is in order.
09/01/2018 By puzzle player I checked waypoints 1 and the final. All is in good shape
07/05/2018 By puzzle player I checked both way point 1 and the final today. Both are where they should be and in good order. Enjoy.
06/22/2018 By puzzle player I have reposted way point 1. Enjoy
06/18/2018 By puzzle player I am in the process of recreating the first way point. I expect to have it ready within a week.
We are doing a check of caches that have been disabled for an extended period. Please maintain this cache and post an appropriate note to the cache page.
As stated in the cache listing guidelines https://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#listingmaintenanceYou may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time - normally a few weeks - in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive or transfer the listing.
PLEASE NOTE: Today's notice is a friendly reminder only. Do not reply to me directly. Rather, please LOG A VISIT on this cache page and WRITE A NOTE with a status update and any intention to revive the cache. Several reviewers participate in cache maintenance tasks so a log posted in this manner is the best way to get your message seen. Without a log posted you risk having the cache archived.
If you have disabled this cache for the winter or a season, please consider this a reminder to post a notice for when you expect the area to re-open. Re-activate the cache if the area is actually open again.
After you have checked on it and it's ready for seeking again, great! You can re-enable the cache page http://support.groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=235 by clicking the link under the cache name or by checking the box that says the cache is active. That will place it back in the review queue. You may also drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. If, however, you discover that the cache is missing and/or you decide not to replace it, then please remove any remaining pieces of it and archive it. This will open up the area for other geocachers to hide their own geocaches. You may also need to digitally relocate any trackable items still listed here. If a "Needs Maintenance" log was posted, you will also need to log an "Owner Maintenance" log to clear the "Needs Maintenance" icon from the geocache page. http://support.groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=404
I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and I am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future. If the cache is not maintained or the status is not updated, it will be archived. Thank you for understanding.
If this sounds like an automated email template, that's because it is. I apologize for that but the volume of messages we get is such that templates like this make the process much more efficient. Thanks for your understanding.
I look forward to hearing from you. Do not reply to this email. It is sent by a no-reply mailbot so I won't get it. To respond, please do NOT send me an e-mail or a message center conversation as they lack needed functionality for reviewing. Leave a new "Reviewer Note" log here on your cache page. If you're not familiar with this process, see the instructions https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=97&pgid=74. I have your cache on my watchlist, and I will receive a notification when you write your note. All reviewer notes are deleted when your cache is published.
Additionally, please note that if I've not heard from you in 4 weeks, I may be forced to archive this cache. Don't let your cache get archived for non-communication
