The Pileated Woodpecker is a very large woodpecker with a long neck and a triangular crest that sweeps off the back of the head. The bill is long and chisel-like, about the length of the head. In flight, the wings are broad and the bird can seem crowlike.

Pileated Woodpeckers are mostly black with white stripes on the face and neck and a flaming-red crest. Males have a red stripe on the cheek. In flight, the bird reveals extensive white underwings and small white crescents on the upper side, at the bases of the primaries.

Pileated Woodpeckers drill distinctive rectangular-shaped holes in rotten wood to get at carpenter ants and other insects. They are loud birds with whinnying calls. They also drum on dead trees in a deep, slow, rolling pattern, and even the heavy chopping sound of foraging carries well. Their flight undulates like other woodpeckers, which helps separate them from a crow’s straight flight path.

Though not seen in Colorado, I've had the pleasure of seeing these magnificent birds while caching in Michigan where it has increased in numbers  since the 1970s, and is now found along most wooded streams, rivers and larger forest tracts guarding caches against unsuspecting muggles.

Came up with Sissadies, and BearAdair. Afterwards went for a few caches with friends. We had pi3, and 1ce cre4m today too.

@lostindenver and I did look like The Walking Dead. Why did the two gimps get picked to find this cool container? Gets a fave!

I solved this 5 days short of one year ago. So today, after the event, @animjason @intrepiidexplorer, @windatmyback and I went to look for the cache. Jason and I look like extras from a Walking Dead scene. I'm hobbling and hes moving a little slower than normal.
But we still managed to make the find. Very cool container.

First inclination turned out to be correct, and with the right tool, had this one solved in minutes. All I can say is --- thank heaven for OCR software, without which this would have taken a rather long while to sort out.
