They work out of sight and mostly out of mind of the general public. There aren’t any television shows about them. Kids don't say they want to grow up to work in a prison. And yet correctional officers put their lives on the line every day, and sometimes have paid the ultimate price.

In 2002 the Colorado Department of Corrections decided it was long overdue for a permanent, public memorial dedicated to all correctional staff and families of the officers who had lost their lives in the line of duty. It was decided to place the memorial on the grounds of the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility in Canon City, Colorado’s oldest state prison, and the site of a 1929 riot which claimed the lives of eight officers. The memorial was dedicated in November, 2005.

The Fallen Officers Memorial is open to the public during daylight hours only. You do not need to get permission to visit. The memorial is directly accessible from the parking waypoint. You will not find the cache here, but you will have to visit the memorial to gather the information required for the final coordinates. The final is not on Department of Corrections property and is available 24/7. Stealth will be required at the final. Log only, BYOP.

The cache is located at: N 38° 26.AB4 W 105° 14.CD6

A = Fourth name, third digit of year.
B = 15th name, sum of the digits of the year.
C. There is a small marker 50 feet east of the memorial. The name on the monument is: Warden Roy Best (3), Roy Best’s Dog "Big Roy" (6), Tom Clements (7), All Officers (8)
D = Number of “Johns” + 1

Parked on the road (extension of Main St) and was walking toward the Memorial when a guard standing on top of the wall called to me and asked what I was doing there. I said I just wanted to look at the Memorial. He said I was on state property, like I wasn't allowed to be there. I decided to leave and come back another day.

The cache description mentions a parking waypoint, but I don't see the coordinates for it. Where is the suggested parking for the Memorial?

Well, dummy me! I didn't notice that this was a puzzle I hadn't solved. So there I was at the memorial looking for a cache instead of getting the information, so the only answer I know is "C"

A morning off to grabs a few Geocaches and this one was on top of the list as we drove into town. A short solving of the puzzle and a short walk to the cache. SL TFTC

This is a nice memorial for a sad occasion. Thxs to Room1009 for bringing us to view it & for his quick response to our call for help when we couldn't get the puzzle checker to work. So we came back to SL. Caching in Canon City today w/The Brecks.

Today, we are in the Canyon City area doing some geocaching with the Psych01 crew. We had a great time finding solved puzzles, challenges we qualified for and the random traditional as they were nearby. This one gave us some troubles because the checker said we didn't have the correct coordinates. We sent a message to the cache owner who confirmed our coordinates. We came back by on our way to lunch and found the cache. Thanks for placing this cache for us to find today. Giving you a favorite point for taking great care of your placed caches.

Came here after the new cache at the prison museum. Solved quickly and found in good shape. Spoke with a muggle at GZ and explained what I was doing. He lives in the yellow building, and seemed to appreciate what it is we do as geocachers. Since I lived in Canon for 16 years back in the 70s & 80s, we talked about the changes since those days. I don’t think he will be so quick to check up on anyone that he sees at GZ in the future. He might come out and ask how you’re doing and listen to some of your caching story’s. FYI... lots of red/black ants at GZ. Thanks for the fun and memorable puzzle. All is well here.

Container is replaced. That is the second time it has disappeared. I thought the spot was safe, but maybe not. If this disappears again I'll have to find a new location. Cache on!
