This search will take you to a Steamboat Ski Area landmark and provide some history of the area.
Steamboat Springs Colorado is known as “Ski Town USA.” It is the home of “Champagne Powder” and world class skiing. No other city in the United States has had as many Winter Olympic athletes compete on the US Ski Team, 69 and counting.

With such a rich alpine heritage, it is not surprising to find one of the most popular ski runs named after one of the local athletes. The coordinates will take you to the marker memorializing this athlete. The dialogue on the marker identifies the relationship between the community and this athlete. The answers to the questions are also there.

The spirit of this hunt presumes that you will be skiing at Steamboat. If you plan it correctly, you will get quite close with two ski lift rides, a ski run down a groomed intermediate slope and some traversing. It should only take a couple of minutes to read the remarks on the monument. You might want to write the information down. Then you can go off and enjoy the namesake run of this Steamboat resident. It is also a groomed intermediate, blue run. This is also the path that many skiers start their ski day with.

Although I have not visited Steamboat in the Summer, there are numerous mountain bike trails in the ski area. It is also a great place to hike. Getting to the monument on a hike increases the difficulty. From the base area, the coordinates are three thousand feet higher and more than a couple of miles away. A mountain bike would be easier, but you might have to manage some pretty good grades.

To qualify your find, please send me an email with the answers to these questions. Remember, no answers are to be given in your log entry no matter how vague they might be.

1. What adjacent mountain peak is also named after this Steamboat resident?

2. What is the name of the artist that created the monument?

3. On what day was the monument dedicated?

I understand the local custom is to give Buddy a pat on the head for good luck and good snow.

Good Skiing to all. I hope you liked the information about the Steamboat area.

BTW, take a picture of what you find and "upload" the photo to the Cache Page. I know I enjoy seeing the monument in different years and different seasons. Hopefully other cachers will enjoy them and enjoy the hunt.

Mr. SRS2 found this cache while skiing at Steamboat with friends. I was stunned to get an idea of the snow depth after locating this cache and comparing Buddy's current height (shorter than me!) to his summer height as demonstrated in other cacher's photos. That said, it was comforting to see as I struck out on a few other skiing caches in the area--I think I know why now!

Thanks for the virtual!

Tough to do this one as the information seems to be missing. Still a beautiful hike!

Ah, finally! This cache was the whole purpose of my trip to Steamboat today. I'm working on the Colorado virtual matrix, so I need this one.

My dog and I got up early to make the drive over from Glen Haven and be in place to take the gondola up at 10 am when it opens. It took us about two hours to reach the monument on a hot, breezeless day, but it was worth it. I'll post pictures when I get home.

The Olympic count of athletes from Steamboat is up to 89 now.
What does it say up there?

Heading back down
So many flowers!

A greatest skiing and a fun virtual cache. This is exactly what virtual caches should be, taking you to someplace fun and beautiful. Not much for powder on the front face today but the back bowl was great and the sun was shining in a blue bird day do you can't beat that. My first time in steamboat, but you can bet I'll be back in the summer and winter. Favorite for the location and great town.

Without the snow the sign was too high up to read. It was well over my head and I'm 6'2"! Anyway I'll try my best to answer the questions in my note to CO. TFTC!

I'm an Aussie who is 1)addicted to skiing, 2)addicted to Steamboat Springs and 3)a passionate geocacher.... so how could I not seek out this cache. Skiing in a group, I had to make several visits to collect all the info. And of course skiied Buddy's Run several times.. in bright sunshine and a bluebird sky. Thank you InsideEdge. I'm emailing the answers to your questions.

One last push for me to the top before I needed to meet up with the rest of the R5 to head back down the gondola. I was beat by the time I got here and thought down would be easy. Wrong. I took the ski trails back? That was tough! Amazed at how high the bust was and could not read anything. Took some pics of it so hopefully I can read to answer the qs. A great hike and cache. Thanks for placing it and for the geofun!

I have been skiing in Colorado for more than 35 years but I had never made it to Steamboat before. This virtual was the main reason for the trip. I was so anxious to get to the slopes that I forgot to get a photo but I got all the answers and have emailed them. TFTC
