History
This court was first built in 1910 after the City & County of Denver had bought the property with the historic ‘Molkery’ building next door for a new park in the Montclair neighborhood. In 1887 this location was originally part of the Baron Walter von Richthofen's lavish Montclair estate which included all the property between here and Richthofen's Castle up the hill two blocks east on E 12th Ave. The former Town of Montclair was officially annexed by Denver in 1903 during which The Molkery briefly operated as an insane asylum. Residents formed the Historic Montclair Community Association in 1907 and successfully lobbied city leaders to preserve the structure for use as a civic building. Their original plan was a public country club concept with tennis courts and indoor space to host local events. The facilities continue to serve these functions to the present day, and The Molkery can still be rented-out for weddings, meetings, etc. The court was renovated in 2021 when Denver voters approved a parks improvement bond measure.
