FTF! with LDG on our way back from Alamosa. Grew up in Walsenburg and had never been back here until now.

FTF! with nite_raven at 4:45pm. Had my eye on this one since it published. We ended up having to make a last minute delivery to an office in Alamosa today and we managed to make it back to Walsenburg with an hour of daylight left. Time to go caching.
Even though we explore every chance we get and nite_raven grew up in Walsenburg, neither of us had ever been out here until now. We figured finding our way with all these roads would be tricky, but the main one manages to go right where you need to be and is pretty obvious. If you're worried about the roads, as long as you are ok with washboards and the occasional cattle guard, any vehicle should make it out here just fine. The entire way in and around GZ would be a great spot to load down with caches! The dark plateaus, the school house?, and the windmills are all neat sights to see on the way in. Is the lake private?
I'd wondered what the dark line on the map was all about. Turns out it was the neat old BLM fence. What a cool spot way out here! We'd never have known about it if it wasn't for the cache. The short hike in is very photogenic. Some snow was hanging on in the shade. Followed some footprints in and wondered if we'd been beat to the FTF! The prints went right to the point where you need to leave the trail and stopped. They then were everywhere on the opposite side from GZ. Fortunately none were on the cache side and the log was blank. Signed the FTF! page and really enjoyed the FTF! prize. The pop-up and the quote are a nice touch.
Seems to be a cave nearby, but it may be on private property and the canyon looks like a fun place to explore. Definitely going to have to come back with more than an hour to kill.
I've actually met one of John Wayne's sons, Patrick I believe, in New Orleans years ago. Somewhere there should be a picture of us while touring a Mardi Gras float making facility standing in front of a giant John Wayne head float. Thanks again for bringing us to a place we'd never have known about otherwise.
