Easy find in an interesting, out-of-the-way place
This area needed a cache. It's a regular size with a log and a few useful or neat items of swag. If you seek it, please exchange swag. It's in Apishapa State Wildlife Area, a beautiful canyon on the eastern plains of Colorado. It's a bit off the beaten path: 16+ miles east of Walsenburg on highway CO 10 to the turnoff for Apishapa State Wildlife Area, then a 20-mile+ drive on dirt roads from CO 10 to the trail-head. The last couple miles require a high-clearance vehicle. It's a relatively short hike out to the cache, but you must descend into the canyon on a trail marked by occasional cairns, then ascend a rocky butte. Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a hat any time of the year, bug repellent in summer. Watch for cacti and snakes.

I set out today to find this cache. I studied google maps for quite a long time trying to decide if I could make it to the suggested parking area. It showed some type of road most of way, but I couldn't tell if it was passible and all of the web information on Apishapa State Wildlife Area always reference a parking area on the south rim which was no help. I laid out a driving route and headed out. I did not know what to expect but as I got closer I saw a sign referencing the North parking area, which gave me hope I would not run into any fences preventing access. I drove on a well maintained gravel/dirt road from HW 10 all the way to N37° 39.170 W104° 19.660. At this point the road became a little more rough due to previous vehicles driving on the road in wetter times. I parked just prior to the suggested parking area and headed out. At the provided coordinates for the trailhead I saw cairns that clearly marked the trail. I was surprised to see how nice the trail was considering how remote this place was. I didn't see a sole on my drive in, but did see two pickups as I drove back to HW10. It was a nice easy hike to the cache and back to the car and the temperature was perfect (I suspect that this location gets hotter than a pistol during the summer). TFTC.

After visiting Bent's Fort and having a nice lunch we headed out and saw tarantulas crossing the road. We continued on and eventually got to the parking area and looked at the breathtaking view and realized where the cache was!!! I headed out alone with threatening rain clouds to the west. I then had to make the adventure "quick". My wife and friends were watching my progress from the rim! I let out a "holler" and they cheered me on from a distance when I discovered the cache!! This is one great caching adventure in a beautiful setting!!!

Thanks for a fun cache to go for!

I signed the log FTF and left a Green Jeep TB for someone else to go for.

I wasn't sure what type of log to post for this one. It wasn't that I didn't find the cache - I never even found where to park to reach the cache. We spent three hours driving around some amazing territory and multiple two tracks, but the closest we ever got was 9/10 of a mile away, and given the terrain, I didn't think that close to 2 miles round trip was a relatively short hike (but I guess that is relative to what, huh? lol). As the sun started sinking low, we decided to call it a day. I didn't want to be hiking this area if it got dark. Perhaps I will be able to try again in the fall after it cools off.
