Get away from it all for a few minutes (an hour if you have the time) and hike or ride your bike in the Carpenter and Geer natural areas on the north edge of Cortez. It's a great place to clear your head, get some exercise, and connect with nature. The cache is along a trail in an area that doesn't have as many visitors and offers a different, almost secluded view of Sleeping Ute Mountain. Enjoy the solitude, but do keep a look out for muggles and don't forget to bring a pencil with you!
Parking is available just off County Rd. 25 and by the hospital, on Mildred Street (County Rd. 26) with a concrete path running between. Numerous side trails in this extensive natural area invite you to climb the mesas, visit the ponds, look at native plants, watch birds and other wildlife, and take in the amazing views of Sleeping Ute Mountain to the southwest, Mesa Verde to the south, and the La Plata Mountains to the east.
