The cache is now a 'bullit', somewhat smaller than before.
Old Fort St. Vrain was built by the Bent, St. Vrain Trading Co. in 1837. It was first used as a fur trade post along the South Platte river from 1837 to 1846. After the site gained fame through the Topographical Reports of John Fremonts first two explorations in 1842 and 1843 it was a stopover for travellers on a north-south route between the Oregon Trail and the Santa Fe Trail, a jumping-off place for Colorado's gold-rushers in 1858 and 1859. It was the first county seat of Weld County beginning in 1861. In the 20th Century, the site was all but forgotten. An interesting book about this Fort is written by Diane Brotemarkle, it's called Old Fort St. Vrain.

Crazy weather today. When heading out here it was 97 degrees in Greeley, we get out here it’s now 85. So glad the owners of this property allow this piece of history to remain here. Thanks for bringing us here.

Out of the way location, but definitely interesting to read about a part of history as it ties in with caches we did along the Santa Fe Trail last year. TFTC.

With all this great sunshine today, we took a country drive to enjoy it. Gander reminded Goose that we had been to this historical location BG (before geocaching). Great history, and as a bonus, we saw a bald eagle, two hawks, and two coyotes. Thanks for the placement, jeeperz1&2!

Found with NuttyIrishman earlier today; the log was completely turned to pull from the rain, but he replaced it with some new paper. TFTC!
