Needs maintenance

There are a couple of ways into this area, but if you choose to park in Palmer lake and hike in There is parking for the trailhead at 39 07.111 North and 104 55.241 West. don't park in a No Parking zone.
There are 2 caches here, the first was placed just inside Palmer lake ice cave back in December. Since then the level of the floor in the cave ( and the floor is mainly made of ice at the entrance ) has gone up about 2 feet. This will not let you get in the main entrance. With the help of squad 51 of Colorado springs I have placed a new cache just about 30 feet North-East of the cave opening. This new cache is under a large boulder at the coordinates posted above. if you want to try to get to the original cache there are a couple ways, although I would rate this cache at a 4/4.5 now. If you go inside the main entrance up to the point where it gets to small to go any further, the cache would be about 20 feet in front of you. Just keep this in mind because you will need to go up on top of the entrance and find a way through the boulders to get to this point. When I was up there on 1-5-02 both caches were in good shape. In the spoiler info I have included the easiest way to get to this cache. This is not a difficult cave, however you should always be careful when underground. Take THREE sources of light and a HELMET. There aren't any pits to speak of in this cave, but it really smarts to hit your head on one of those low flying boulders. It's easy to get lost as well so pay attention to where you are going.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE TRASH IN THE CAVE OR WRITE THINGS ON THE ROCKS.

There are no decorations in the cave because it is a boulder cave formed in hard granite, but it's worth seeing. I spent about 1 hour inside wandering around. If you need help finding the way on let me know.

The contents of the original cache are as follows:

  • 2 packages of beef jerky
  • Rug rats magnet
  • Dr. Suess collectible tin
  • pokemon stickers
  • sunflower seeds
  • and a mini make up kit. I forgot to write down the contents of the second cache just outside the cave.

 Hints

If you are trying to get to the original cache, the best way I have found would be to start from the second cache just outside the cave. when you are standing under this boulder at the cache continue walking under that boulder the same direction as when you came in to the cache. after about 7 feet there will be a log leaning up against a boulder. This was placed here to help you climb up on top and then down the other side. continue going North west for about 30 feet, going down when ever you get a chance. When you get down to the lowest level you will need to go off to the South west just a little to get back into the middle of the stream bed. The original cache was placed inside the first room in the cave and about 8 feet off the ground.

I replaced the cache in the cave today in the original place I found it in 2002...it's the second or third time I've had to replace it. Six of us made it into the cave. When you find it, please "lock" it in with the rocks that are in place now when you put it back. It's a great time to enter the cave...water levels are low and all the ice is gone so it's still cold but feels nice compared to the hot weather outside. Bob Hostetler

Friends did a complete search inside the cave and were unable to find the cache. I'm putting together a replacement cache (again) and will place it where I originally found it in 2002. Bob Hostetler

As a way to start the New Year off right, I was fortunate to be included in a geo-group consisting of Brennan7, 3 Williams Kidz, RPieperCO, YamaGypsy, and Kerewin0430. I’ve been on this Balanced Rock Road / trail before, but it was much more fun with the group. I DNF’ed this one back in October 2013, so it was good to finally come after it and make the find almost four years later. Brennan dove in a did the heavy lifting for the team, but Kerewin0430 took one for the team; becoming wounded while bringing the container to safety. I tried to coax her to my vehicle so I could show off my extensive medical kit, but she brushed off the flesh wound and wanted to press on…in the best traditions of a hopping, Monty Python Knight. I snapped a quick photo, because there are often disbelievers when I relate the numerous instances of K trackers High Drama at geocaches. Thanks to the CO for placing this nice cache for everyone to find; Patsy and I both appreciate it.

Out for a New Year's hike with Brennan7, 3 Williams Kidz, RPieperCO, YamaGypsy, and K Trackers. The air was crisp and cold, perfect temp as long as you keep walking. :-) What a cool area! The ice spiderwebbed as one after another walked on it, but didn't break. The cache container impaled my finger as it was tossed to us, but the we signed in pen, not blood! Thanks for bringing this spot to our attention!

Cache #2 on the day for the geo-team of myself (just me, no Kidz), Brennan7, RPieperCO, Kerewin0430, YamaGypsy, and K Trackers. Pretty chilly in this area with no sunshine, but we met with success, and SL. TFTC !

What a neat place. Went on a nice hike today with 3 Williams Kidz, RPieperCO, Kerewin0430, YamaGypsy, and KTrackers. We wandered over to the ice cave from the main trail and had a great time exploring the place. The only blood lost on the excursion was lost here by Kerewin. Take care of that hand! Thanks for the fun cache!

Moondancing, Since it's been found a couple of times this year including by me, I'm pretty sure that the "real" cache inside the cave is still there. It does get flushed out in the spring maybe one year out of three but that shouldn't have happened since the "finds" this summer. You've just got to be willing to get a little wet and certainly cold and dive in after it. The outside one is often missing and I don't attempt to replace it. The unique thing about this geocache is that it's IN the cave.

Had a great hike and searched while we were "bouldering" on 11/11 but I'm thinking the cache(S) may be missing, considering how long its been since the last find. Too much ice today to climb in, but we'll be back!.

We forgot to log this one while we were camping near PL. it was awesome, we climbed up and low and the water kept it so cool in there! We had a blast, TFTC
