Easy access via large pullout/parking area along Rim Rock Drive.
Most monuments are built by people. But this impressive monument was created by a natural process where rocks wear away or erode at different rates. Soft rocks, like the Wingate sandstone that forms the canyon walls, washes away quickly while harder rocks, like the Kayenta capstone that tops the mesas, erodes more slowly. Here you can see sketches showing the how this structure evolved via this process of differential erosion.

TO LOG THIS CACHE, PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS:

According to the information found at this location,

1. What is the name of this geological feature?

2. Name three other named features found in this park that are a result of this same natural process of differential erosion.

We had a fun drive around the Monument with friends. Later my wife and I hiked up from below to what this cache is about. Awesome view from below it.

Big day of caching. This part of the day was relaxing compared to all of the hikes in the heat. Thanks for bringing us here

By the time I had hiked to a number of overlooks of this feature in 98 degree temperatures I was mighty sick of it. Colorado NM was a test of endurance today.
