South of Del Norte, CO. off County Road 13. Turn off the road at N 37 38.712 W 106 21.848 onto a Jeep trail.
We are brand new to the sport and this is our first cache. We decided to do caches that 4X4 enthusiasts could have fun getting to and not necessarily have to hike or climb very far on foot. Without leaving established trails you can drive to within .04 miles of this cache. If you are not driving a fairly capable 4 wheel drive however, it is recommended that you park at .16 and hike the rest of the way. The ammo can is well covered with rocks but should still be easy to find if you know where to look. Even if you didn't find it, the view alone from this location would be well worth the trip. Be sure to wave to the mule deer you see along the way (they seem to like that). Don't bother waving to the coyotes, they are a pretty anti-social bunch.

Four wheel drive is not required for all but the last of this trail in dry weather. However, if rain or snow are involved 4x4 is mandatory.

The original contents of this cache are...

With no finds in about five years, we wondered why, so we thought we should give it a try. The reason quickly became obvious. The road from CR 13 at the point given by the CO was easy all the way to the loop where a lesser road branches off to the NW and a faint track went south. We took the latter and after a short distance found it blocked off (at the end of a deep erosion furrow in which we had to back up because we couldn't see the closure until we were there - perhaps there had once been a sign back at the loop, but there is nothing there now). So we took off on foot and followed the old and still visible road to a point NW of the cache. We then did the steep, rough, cactus-strewn climb. Once on the flat top, the cache was very easy to find, and in perfect shape. (Ammo boxes rule) For the trip back down we headed more directly down to the truck, with the going no easier. This was the last cache in a day of long and steep hikes and we were pretty bushed by the time we got back to the truck. Once home, we looked again at the satellite image and smacked our foreheads. Had we continued walking on the road for just a few steps more we would have gone around to a point just west of the cache where the old track would have made for a much easier climb. Lesson learned. What an awesome view! I think the Forest Service/BLM has closed the road to this one. I had to walk about 0.6 miles to get the cache. The awesome views were well worth it! TFTC. TNLN. SL.

This would have been much easier if the GPS was working correctly, thus, lost again. Did find it though, cache was in good shape.
