Information Sign

This is number six in a series of historical points within Douglas County Colorado.

Russellvill is a ghost town. There are no buildings left and the area is now a park.

John Beck, a Cherokee, while on his way to the gold fields of California, stopped at Ralston Creek near Denver and found about $5 worth of gold. He reported his find to William Green Russell. In 1858, Russell and his party found gold where the Cherokee trail crossed Russell Gulch and staked out a claim. In July of the same year, John Cantrell and some army men from Fort Laramie visited the diggings and took a sack of gold dust home to Kansas. Exaggerated news reports caused a gold rush in 1859, which was the death knell for the Plains Indians' way of life. Douglas County was officially created in November of that year with a population of "at least 60."

The cache container is a small glass jar. This is a coin cache. It started with two quarters in it; a 2006 North Dakota and a 2006 South Dakota. Put a quarter in and take one out. Try to make the one you put in different and put the information in your on-line log. The idea is to see how many different quarters are put into the cache. This is not a requirement to log the cache.

Coins so far are: 1984
2000 MA, 2000 VA, 2001 KY, 2004 ID, 2005 MN, 2005 WV, 2006 ND, 2006 SD, 2006 NV, 2007 UT, 2007 IA

A good place to park is just east of the bridge at: 39 20.789, 104 41.840. There is a trail near the sign that heads toward the cache. Use the trail! Coming directly from the road is going through private property. I have permission to place the cache where it is so please don't abuse the privilege. Thanks. The trail crosses a small stream about six times. For most of the year it is an easy hop.

Thanks Geocaching Colorado for the Geocache of the Month Award, as the second series to win!

I parked nearly a mile south at the trail head and biked in. This trail doesn’t see much activity as it’s quite overgrown and tight even for a bicycle. The stream was a little deeper with mud then I thought it would be and I nearly went over the handlebars in the middle! .
I picked up the TB to move along. Thank you for the placement

Nice morning for caching, so we went after a few caches near Russellville Road that we haven't found yet. Short hike to the cache. Thanks for keeping this older cache alive.

Thanks for the history and an enjoyable hike. Ummm, I forgot to bring a state quarter, though.

Nice hike! I had to trust my map because gps was bouncing. Log was really moldy so I put a new one in a plastic bag. Thanks so much for the fun!

Thanks, Jim Reeb! The history lesson and age of the cache gets a favorite point from me. It was a beautiful spring day to geocache in Douglas county. I worked on a couple of power series up in the hills before lunch, and others on the back roads between Castle Rock and Littleton on the way home to Arvada. After living in Laredo, Texas for 19 years, we retired and moved to Colorado last year to be closer to the grandchildren. My geoname is a combination of TAMIU (Texas A&M International University) for which I still teach online courses, and my name. We love Colorado, and I hope to be back in Douglas County again soon.

Found this one after a really nice quick hike! I like the open space area up here! After a few moments in the area I made the find but didn't want to touch the log to much as it is growing. It's dry now but the damp dark space did its damage to the log. This cache really needs a new log. :) thanks for the hike and the great hide.
