!! Exciting New Cache Series!!

“COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST”

The Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of Caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have ‘walked’ before us.

There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado.  This series will introduce you to many of them.

The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones.

COLORADO SPIRIT QUEST is not affiliated with any other ‘Spirit Quest’ group.  Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states.

The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task.  It cannot be accomplished by just one or two people.  This project will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers  willing to place these caches.

After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state.

If you are interested in joining the “Walking Through History Clan” contact may be made by sending an e-mail to the owner of “Colorado Spirit Quest #1 – Mountain Passage”.  Use the ‘Send Message” link at the center of the page of their profile.

Each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.

REMEMBER:

If you are APPREHENSIVE about cemeteries – AVOID this series.

Thanks to Clan Members: Greasepot, Taylorgeotracker, Ivy Dog Parents, Team Boogity3, and Grand High Pobah, CDirtO, FulComers,  Boborr 80909, Fulcomers, and Imusttravel2000.   New Clan members are always Welcome

This lady won a Pulitzer Prize. Mary learned storytelling from her Irish-born mother, her father and her uncles Pete, Tim, and Jamie. Their fairy tales of banshees, leprechauns and pookas would later reappear in her stories and plays. She was born in 1907 in Denver, Colorado and attended Denver schools, graduating from West High in 1922 at the age of 15. She attended the University of Denver and the University of Colorado before joining the Rocky Mountain News, Denver’s oldest newspaper. An attractive, shapely, black-haired woman who dressed stylishly, she wrote a newspaper column the called "Society Notes." Her childhood home, a small one-story cottage at 532 W. 4th Ave. in a working class neighborhood, has been designated a Denver Landmark in her honor. In 1931, Mary left the newspaper to write plays, while also working as a free-lance writer of many articles, short stories and children’s books. Hoping to bring laughter to wartime America, Chase wrote a comedy about a six-foot tall imaginary white rabbit. Harvey opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran for 1,775 performances, also becoming a successful 1950 Universal-International Pictures movie starring Jimmy Stewart. The play became an immediate success and won a Pulitzer Prize. Her later plays included ‘Bernardine' (1952), ‘Mrs. McThing' (1952), and ‘Midgie Purvis' (1961). She died in 1981. To find the coordinates for the actual Micro cache, you WILL need to use dates from the stone DIRECTLY to the WEST of this famous lady.(not hers) (Waypoint : N 39° 44.AAA / W 105° 05.BBB) Find the “AAA” number by subtracting 1102 from the date birth date furthest to the south. Find the “BBB” number by subtracting 1693 from the death date the furthest to the north.

The second part was a bit challenging.

I saw Harvey the play a zillion years ago. Very good play.

Found it, but as the others have said the coordinates do appear to be off.
Cashe is wet and not rideable.
A little maintenance is in order to put in some fresh paper and maybe a fresh canister that does not leak.

Quick first stage, but second took a while, and the muggle sitting in his car next to GZ didn't help any. TFTC

I did not find this in December of 2014. But visited the Crown Hill Cemetery today and try again. Found this time.

This was an informative multi. I wasn't expecting a humble headstone. Final was 30 ft off for me.

I never heard of Mary Chase before, so thanks for creating this cache so I could learn a little about this great author! I was a little confused if I had the right person at first, as she was born in 1906, not 1907 as the write up says. Everything else was fairly straight forward.
I had a ball finding the cache at the end. It was nice to have a multi that wasn't too complicated. Thanks for creating this one!

Harvey is one of my favorite movies. When I get stressed I think of the demeanor of Elwood P. Down and it always helps.
The coordinates were about 40 ft off for me. Couldn't have found it without the excellent hint.

We loved Mary's story and finding her resting place. Harvey is in our top 10 favorite movies. The coords we're off a bit.

Wow! Either my calculations were way off and I was very lucky, or the coords are off. I solved the puzzle and trusted previous logs with hints about the cache location once there. Made the find. Log is a little damp. Happy 4th! Grabbing some caches on this beautiful day. Quick find with @WindAtMyBack . Tftc!

Found with @LostinDenver never would've found it without the hint. TFTC

I ended up on an epic adventure with yellowdogs and jREST. I really wanted to go and find GC19. So, I picked a five day stretch to make my attempt. I roped in a couple of caching friends into the misadventure and we were off with my two geodogs. The five of us made an interesting group. We drove over 3000 miles on the trip going out and back. Since we enjoy the same types of caches it was easy to come up with a list. We target the three main kinds of caches: oldies, virtuals, and earthcaches. We threw in a few others mainly to grab a cache in the 72 counties we headed through. Really got to light up that county map. Ended up with 152 caches in the found pile.

The first night was a little rough. We got a late start and headed into some heavy rain. We already had a hotel reserved in Sioux City, IA; so we knew we had to get there. Found one cache to fill the day in for me. The first day was spent caching our way across northern Nebraska. We had a line of counties that we wanted to grab. Some pretty country once you get further west. It is always nice to see the varied topography of the states we visit. After finding 35 caches, we called it a night in Scotts Bluff.
Day 2 dawned sunny, but cool. We wanted to get past Denver, but our route was longer than anticipated. So we ended up a little short. Got to see some interesting spots though. We hit the high point in Nebraska, cached along a lonely stretch of highway in Colorado, picked up some virtuals in the Denver area, before heading into the mountains for the Cache Across America. We continued exploring the mountains before finding a place to sleep for the night west of Denver.

On the third day, we made it into Denver after some virtuals and then headed south through the mountains to GC 19. We made it. The road was open and the weather perfect. Lots of warnings about the fire danger. We picked up a few other caches and even took a detour into New Mexico so yellowdogs could light up the state. Nice. I love it when a plan comes together.

Day 4 found us in Trinidad. We had a long way to go and a short time to get there. Luckily, at this point the route was pretty straight forward. We headed north roughly to Nebraska. We did take a detour to grab GC31. I already had it, but we were too close not to add it to the list. We ended up caching longer than anticipated due to a lack of sleeping options. Finally found a place in Thedford.

Our last day was short and to the point. We had a line of counties between us and the Iowa border and we wanted to find a cache in each of them. We found one or two caches in each of them before hitting the border at noon. Right on schedule After that, it was just a matter of beating feet home.

Thanks to all the COs that placed or created a cache for us to find on this trip. Without you, we would not have found have the interesting places we ended up. I couldn't think of a better way to spend vacation. We used our Team Barcelona stamp to mark all the physical logs.

We pulled over here to grab this old multicache after picking up the virtual. Wow. This is an old one in the Spirit Quest department. Nice to be able to find it. We did the field math and then relocated to the final. We had to check a few spots, but we managed to figure it out in the end.

Took a bit of a long weekend, well five days anyway and hopped in a car with Boreal Walker and yellowdogs (AKA - Team Barcelona) and headed west aiming for parts unknown. This cache was one of those on the adventure. Nice set up, and one that we enjoyed. I have been in here before with the DutchessOfStuff after some virtuals. Today, I was back again and after this one. TNLNSL

I am on a road trip with Boreal Walker and jREST from Minnesota to New Mexico and back meandering our way through as many counties as we could with many target caches in our sights. The weather was decent, although we did have a day that the temperatures reached 100 degrees and we were very thankful for the air conditioning the car provided. We enjoyed our journey and the many laughs along the way along with the great places some of these caches brought us to. It took us a bit of searching to spy this nice hide. Gets a favorite!
Stamped the log Team Barcelona. Thanks for the cache! BigSmile

TFTC. Started this one last year but too many muggles around the final location. This morning relatively muggle free so I had time to really root around! This is like a huge weight off my shoulders.

This is one of my favorite movies, so I enjoyed learning about a Denver connection. Thanks for putting this one together, Ivy Dog Parents.

Solved this one awhile ago and couldn't find the final. Came back today to make another run at it and was successful this time - woo hoo, good week to find a multi for the Mary Hyde event. Still lots of muggles around this evening, including someone else who was looking for a muggle related item in the same area and eventually found it - then I could go in for the search for the cache! Hoping to find another nearby geocache, but there's another muggle parked next to ground zero..Thanks for the hide - I love caching that takes you to a cemetery! Gets a favorite point!

Found at 6:45, find no. 903.
