This is the fourth of a series of American Race Tracks in which some are defunct and some are still going. I have spent a great deal of my adult life racing cars of all types and so this will be fun revisiting the racetracks of yesteryear. Be sure to add any photos or comments if you have experienced them too.

From the late 1930s through 1988, Lakeside Amusement Park operated Lakeside Speedway on the park grounds. The auto racetrack was a 1/5 mile oval and featured races of three car classes sponsored by CARC: stock, limited modified and fully modified. The race track was built on the site of the park's original baseball diamond and incorporated the original stands into the new use. Look to the North and West a little to see the degrading grandstands and what little of track remains today.

My parents used to take me to Lakeside Speedway every Sunday night during the late 50’s to watch the jalopy races as I called them. I was hooked on the noise of those screaming motors and the smells of burning race fuel and rubber.
I remember all the wrecks at a thrill a minute.

The placement of stands in turn one eventually proved to be the undoing of racing programs at the speedway. The heavy chain link fence protecting these stands were no match for the bigger and heavier race cars that had evolved through the years, and when a car got into the fence, during a CARC program in 1988, scattering debris through the crowd, a spectator life was lost.

There is a parking lot just south of the cache area. Use lots of stealth.
Please put back very carefully so it won’t get muggled

I love this type of hide in an urban setting. Only a geocacher will see it for what it really is Smile. TFTC!

With the days getting longer and beautiful spring weather I'm able to catch a few caches after work for the Cache Carnival.
Well done on a perfectly blended urban cache. Another fav point from me and well deserved.
TFTC!

This cache brings back such fond memories of my childhood. I didn't ever get to go to the race track but i went to the amusement park frequently in the 70s and the noise from the speedway was just part of the experience. Thanks for the memories TFTC BigSmile

I never made it to this racetrack when it was open, but it definitely has not aged well since its closure. A sad story to a sad race track. Thanks for placing the cache, as it provides me with the opportunity to see and discover this piece of history.

Out on a beautiful August day with granddaughter. Had a nice walk to the cache and after a few moments we had the cache in hand. Signed log and replaced cache as found. Great hide. Loved the theme of the cache. I had an uncle and a cousin who were dirt track modified racers in the Burlington, IA area years ago. Many memories of 34 Raceway. TFTC!

Out making the find of the day. Great hide - love the camo on this one! Fortunately the nearby construction was not an issue finding this one. Never saw any of the races here, but thanks for the history lesson and creative hide - gets a favorite point!
