CONGRATULATIONS TO MaPaChoo FOR FTF!!
Cannon Mountain (8,609 feet) rises above Overland Road and Little James Creek. It can be accessed from a small parking pull-off that has an adjacent yellow U.S. Forest Service Property Boundary sign. Reaching the top of the peak requires a fairly short, moderately steep hike, and you will be able to find and follow a trail/old road for a portion of the distance. Some bushwhacking is necessary. The entire climb can be done on Forest Service public land. There is no need to trespass on private land to the west. The peak's summit is forested, so views are restricted. But it's a pleasant place. A small cairn is located at the highest point.

The cache is flat, and yellow. Look for it in the "cannon's" bore (a fallen log.....). Then reach in to extract your mountain delight. Be certain to bring a pen or pencil for signing the log. There is space in the cache for a geocoin or two, but little else. Have fun!

From the top of Cannon Mountain it's easy to drop down to the north on USFS land to a nearby trail that leads to some other marvelous caches in the vicinity, including Kleaver Karl's Kache. This route would not be the normal one used to reach these caches. If you decide to use this alternative, plan to spend several hours in order to reach the series of caches that are available, and to return to your parking place on Overland Road.

Great first cache of the day. We parked at the waypoint provided and found the trail and this cache. However being unfamiliar with the area and the trails and that there is a creek, we discussed our option of either returning the way we came or wading through. It didn't take Mrs. Mountaineer long she went right across (Shoes and socks on) with our geo golden retriever Honey Bear that loves finding geocaches along with swimming in the creek. I took my shoes and socks off and joined them on the other side. Because our truck was parked on the side of the road we did 9 miles and enjoyed the entire hike. TFTH and taking us on this adventure.

After a target cache today and ended up coming up empty handed. Had to walk away trying to keep my head up while wiping tears. Glad everything is okay here...

Found GC2J3A5 - Explore the Cannon, on August 15, 2017 using Cachly for iOS.

Thank you, Denali41 for placing a fun cache for all of us to enjoy and giving back to the community. I look forward to finding more of your caches. I also look forward to potentially finding Geocaches with you one day and sharing stories of our hobby or should I say addiction? Cheers!

Easy walk up. The actual top of Cannon Mountain is a little to the northwest, so I walked over there to claim the peak. The cache was an easy find, just a little bit of residiual snow left up here.

I originally had planned to go after a single lonely cache today but when I got up this morning my knee was still a little sore from the 14 mile CMC hike in RMNP on Saturday. So I went with Plan B which was to get a couple D/T combos that will move me closer to my 5X Fizzy and some other caches that will help with challenges I'm working toward.

I headed up to the Peak to Peak highway and then down Overland to the parking spot below this cache. I had three targets on my hike from this location. First was this cache. I humped it up the hill, having to stop and catch my breath a couple times. Made it to GZ and saw the bullet in the end of the cannon. Signed the log and then headed off to Stuck Bronco. Thanks Steve for placing this cache, it was sure good for getting warmed up!!!
