Moderate to heavy hike for the first 1¼ mile hiked (as measured by ground traveled, not distance to cache) after that terrain levels out a bit. Cache is a green ammo box, and the hint is not very helpful once you see the area your in. Sorry, I could not think of a better one. So you will have to really use your GPS skills. In spring, or with snow on the ground, this will take some searching. Fall may be the easiest hunt, but the least pretty view.
This is a most excellent hike, and I found out about it from the excellent book "Trail Guide to Northern Colorado" by Melodie S. Edwards (no relation). I think her desciption from the book is spot on…

"This hike provides one of the most superb examples of northern Colorado's natural diversity, the perfect place to bring a visitor who has had no experience of our wild places."

Exactly! You start with a very desert like section, and then you move to an area of ponderosa pines, and… well you need take the trail, it rocks! Be sure to bring your camera along for some fantastic views of Poudre canyon. I plan to check out this trail again in the early summer and early fall because I am sure the area will change its look.

This cache is also very different for me because I had a pretty crazy experience when I went to place the cache. Other possible names of for cache were "Lost Dog Cache", "Bad pet owner cache" and "Where did all the elk come from! cache"

As I approached the spot I wanted to place the cache my dog Gabe kept pulling at me… Fine, so I let him go. Next thing I know Gabe bolts off and scares a heard of Elk that were all around me! OK so I'm not that observant, and I was looking at the GPS. Gabe chases the heard strait up a nearby hill and very quickly loses sight of me. Several minutes later he came back as usual, but when I called to him I think the echo confused him and he turned, not to me, but towards the trail leading home. So I kept calling for him while I placed the cache (The log entry should make for interesting reading). Then I stuck around the area as long as I dared because it was starting to get dark. I gave up on finding Gabe that day, and probably forever. When I was nearly to the bridge, there was Gabe drinking from the stream, and he just turned to look at me like "what took you so long". I put him on his leash and went home in a startled, but elated mood.

I certainly hope your trip is much less eventful!

  • Items at the time of placement were:
  • A laser etched envelope holder that I got from my very first cache "A Cache"
  • VHS Movie "Men in Black" widescreen edition
  • Zipper ring thermometer
  • Camera, Logbook & Pencil.

We've passed by this cache many times, but never put it on our schedule to pursue it. Today that was different. Fresh snow on the trail made it slippery and wet as the snow made the trail a ponding place. About 6" of snow near the hiding spot. Clue suggestion might include: dead conifer with Rocky Mountain Juniper at it's base.

I met the cache owner at the September 15/1500 event honoring Tahosa's 15 years of caching and 1500 quality finds (GC6QJ7T). I told Dan that I intended to go for this cache sometime and mentioned several DNFs over the last 5 years. He gave me permission to replace it if I didn't have any luck finding it. Today I headed up Roaring Creek for the first time. It's a really nice trail! I arrived at my GZ and commenced the search. There were a few inches of snow on the ground which added to the difficulty. I searched for over an hour before deciding it wasn't meant to be. So I got the new container out of my pack and placed it within 20 feet of my GZ. It's a 50 cal. ammo can with just a log in it (no pen or pencil), plus a TB. It's on the uphill side of a large live pine and should be keeping with the 1.5D rating. I'm not totally confident the original isn't still there. Maybe someone who has found it before could take a look if they're ever in the area. Thanks Dan for placing this cache so long ago and for luring me to this great area!!!

There were 3 of us, and we looked for quite awhile with no luck.

Killian33, her friend Ali and I hiked up to Roaring Creek and spent 90 minutes searching over 60' around GZ. Pretty sure it's gone.

Can someone verify if this cache is till around or not? I really encourage everyone to take a hike up here but I wouldn't go just to grab this cache.

I had the day to myself so I decided to take a hike further up the canyon to hopefully escape some of the heat and give this cache a shot. It has been almost 4 years since it was last found. The hike up was beautiful with amazing views up and down the Poudre Canyon. My Boston terrier, Lily, was getting a little overheated so we stopped in the shade and next to streams a few times. We arrived at ground zero and the GPS seemed to be pointing to a certain tree but alas we could find no cache near this particular tree. I increased my search radius by quite a bit and still came up empty. I also went aways down the trail and came back to verify the location of the cache. There has likely been a lot of growth in the past four years (not to mention since it was placed 14 years ago). There has also been a lot of change in the area due to beetles and wind. It is entirely possible that I missed the cache but I also believe there is a good possibility it is MIA. Regardless I appreciated the hunt and I especially appreciated the hike. Thanks for bringing me up here!

Even though the ammo container was closed tight and the log in a ziploc, it was damp and moldy. We could still write in it, but you might consider putting in a new log book before long.
