Rest stop cache Eastbound I70

Georgetown and Silver Plume

Georgetown was founded in 1859 by gold seekers George and David Griffith.  It was silver which put Georgetown on the map and earned it the nickname "Silver Queen".  It was royal indeed with platted streets, elegant hotels, cultural societies, and tidy homes.  But Georgetown suffered from absence of rail service, which made shipping costly and time-consuming.  When the Colorado Central Railroad finally did reach town in 1877, the city barely had time to enjoy it.  Leadville's spectacular mineral strikes the following year made it Colorado's new silver champion.  Trumped but not tarnished, Georgetown continued to produce steady yields through the silver panic of 1893, a remarkable 29 year run of prosperity.

Silver Plume was incorporated in 1880.  It contained more than 40 mines and several hundred claims.  Many of the profits flowed two miles downhill to Georgetown.  The town housed two thousand miners and had it's own newspaper, brewery, and cornet band.

Congratulations to Duck-Boy for being the most excellent first finder.

Third day of our trip back home from Las Vegas to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Grabbing some favorites and 4 new counties in Colorado.
A quick stop for an easy find. It's just balanced in place; not hanging.
Thanks to Scaber for placing this cache

Took a minute to find this one because there were a lot of Muggles looking in. The George Town Loop train began blowing its horn and gave me the perfect opportunity to make the grab. With muggles distracted, I signed the log Brysworld and then placed the container back in its home. Thank you for the history lesson and a nice little cache on my way through the area.

Stopped by here along the drive from Leadville back to Denver. Missed the first scenic view, but was able to get off at this one. Interesting location.

Had it to myself just long enough to find the caches before a bunch of other people showed up as well. Surprisingly chilly and windy.
