The 1919 Black Sox
There have been a number of sports scandals in which players have thrown or otherwise fixed the outcome of a game, match, etc. for the purpose of collecting on bets placed against them.
But NONE were as monumental, earth shattering, and damaging to their chosen sport as the 1919 Black Sox scandal.
For those who don't know, the 1919 Chicago White Sox were considered to be outright unbeatable- and they were led by none other than Shoeless Joe Jackson himself. That year the White Sox flew through the playoffs and were considered a "sure-thing" in the World Series, meaning that if you bet on the Sox and they won you would win a little, but if you bet against the Sox and they lost then the pay out would be huge.
To further complicate things, players in those days weren't paid hardly anything, even though the club owners, managers and pretty much everyone else was making money hand-over-fist. This only served to add more temptation for the players to throw a game.
After the White Sox lost the 1919 series in a complete upset, rumors of a fix were all but immediate. It was simply impossible that nearly every starting player would perform so terribly in comparison to their play that whole season prior. Eventually they would be taken to court over the matter, and although they were technically acquitted, they were still banned from baseball AND from the Hall of Fame- a punishment almost exclusively focused on Shoeless Jos Jackson.
As a result of the scandal, the 1919 Chicago White Sox would forever be known as...
